Boss rc-30 loopstation

I recently bough a rc-30 and want to back uo the tracks to my pc.When I connect it my pc tells me the device connected has malfunctioned.Is this because I have the loop station powered off the batteries instead of the power supply or is this a genuine problem? Any help would be great!
