Am going to Milan in August and staying in Bergamo. Would it be crazy to go to Venice from there on a day trip or should we overnight there or in Milan Centre? Also would like to see somewhere on Lake Garda which would be accessible by train as we're using public transport. Any ideas welcome, also hotel recommendations which are reasonably priced. Thanks

If you havent been to Venice youd be crazy not to go. About 3 hours by rail (you may need to changein Brescia I think) , so doable in a long day, but better to stay overnight there if you can at all. Milan is only about an hour from Bergamo by bus or train. Worth a visit, but you just cant beat Venice. August a hot and crowded month to be there though....
Lake Garda is about half way to Venice. Best stop by rail is Peschiera. You can get buses or boats around the lake from there.

I live in Turin and most of my visitors pass through Milan. Everyone who has been there agrees that Milan is hardly worth the trouble. There are two, three nice things and then the rest is boring. Better spend your time exploring Venice and Bergamo itself.

Venice is amazing. It's great to be there at night, as it's a bit more peaceful when the day trippers go home.

My advice to you is to stay 1/2 days in Desenzano ( located at the base of Lake Garda).
That way you get to see some of Lake Garda, and you're on the rail connection to Venice (its about 1 hour and 40 minutes if I remember correctly).

Sure is, and get a vaporetto at night down the Grand Canal and sit outside down the back, it's absolutely beautiful, for the equivalent of a bus fare.
