I cannot get my Dell latitude D430 to boot, The Dell logo screen comes up then the Windows XP then the screen goes blank and it starts all over again. It will not allow me to start in safe mode, every time I try I get a wall of text along the lines of: multi(0)disk(0)risk(0)partition(1)\windowssystem32\drivers etc. and then it goes back to Dell opening logo screen. The diagnostic gives me an error code : 2000-0146. From what I can gather this is a hard drive failing error code....any ideas on how I can retrieve data on hard drive?

    Thanks a mill mp22.

Quick question, are there any dangers to the other PC? Possible virus or other? Also do you think this means my Dell latitude D430 is a gonner or is it a matter of replacing the hard drive? Basically I got a loan of this computer and would like to return it the same as I got it.

The other pc should be ok,make sure you scan (with antivirus) the hd before you save anything from it.

A new hd might not be needed try using the recovery partition first press F12 when the dell logo appears, make sure all data required has been recovered. If that dose not work replace the hd,you will have to borrow a disk drive to install the OS.

I would imagine by the sounds of it that the hard drive is failing. Even if you get it sorted it generally is only a short term fix. Maybe buying a new hard drive is the best option.
