Dirty/damaged marble fireplace

Hi, our marble fireplace is quite worn looking. It's white marble with a few black flecks through. Over the hearth, there are what look like a few smoke stains, and the floor bit has a few cracks, pockmarks and lots more stains, presumably from coal dust or burns. The marble itself looks very dull; I've tried rubbing in baby oil to bring it up and this works a little but it still doesn't sparkle the way I'd like. Anyone got any ideas of what more I can do (cheaply) to improve the look of it?

Wow, that was quick, thanks. I presume you mean squeeze the toothpaste on, work it in with a rag or something, then rinse off?
