mondeo so. both good cars but the interior in the vectra will make you cry

Thank for the replies but i don't mind the interior so much it's the mechanics that worries me is there any problems associated with either models I need something that will stay running for a few years

I'd swing for a Mondeo myself

that sri opel diesel is reliable and pretty quick. the mondeo seems to get good opinions on here most of the time but i dunno anything about them cos fords tire me even thinking about them

Thanks it's the reliability that is the most important

Doesn't the 150 vectra have its share of problems?

Perhaps the biggest plus for both cars is that they appear to be ex UK. Therefore there's little risk of "homebrewed diesel" being through either of them. Drive both and see what you think OP. I reckon the Mondi has the best chassis, whereas the Vectra has the better engine.

I drove both and like both just not sure about the vectra's reliability if the Mondeo had smaller mileage then there would be no contest

The Vectra's engine is the Alfa / Fiat sourced one and is actually quite reliable. Once regularly maintained (particularly the timing belt & water pump) then you should have no more bother than most. I've driven a Fiat Bravo with that engine and it was very quick and frugal indeed.

No real gripes with the Mondeo, but with the mileage that's on it, it may well be in the zone for DPF replacement either now or pretty soon. You also might want to check to see if that car needs to be topped up with EOLYS fluid as some of the earlier Ford TDCI's used this stuff to assist DPF regeneration. Top up of the older models cost around £200 stg whenever due (between 30-50k miles, depending on the cars use)

Fords tire you and Opels don't? I had to lol.

The Opel will eat bushings and if it's the 150 do a swirl flap delete. Great engine though. Ford have probably got the best every day range of any manufacturer today. There are no major reliability scares either. I'd have a Mondeo a million times over a Vectra. Much better car and you don't get the silly Opel indicators either:D

Gosh I forgot about those things! They are a PITA :D

If they are ex-UK cars I'd still insist on a full service history (check it) and also a HPI check.

The same rule applies to cars in the North as it does here, they may of lost a few miles coming across on the ferry.

Nice cars though, personally I'd have the Vectra as we have had issues with our family Mondeo. Others swear by them.

    +1 re; the washed fuel.

Mondeos are better all round choice too.

also, as john rightly says aboove, a premium HPI check is a must.

Had the 150 Sri Vectra up until last year and really miss it. Absolute peach of an engine and would regularly return 1100km from a tank. Mine had started to develope the swirl valve issue before I traded it and its an expensive fix. The 08 model would have the modified EGR valve design so won't suffer from this problem They eat bushes and tie rods but these are very cheap items to replace and if you poly-bush it they will last much longer and really help with the handling. The torque and acceleration is fantastic and feels a lot more than the 150bhp.....buy the vecrta

It's a Fiat engine in the Vectra. ;)

And the only redeeming feature IMO...

Definately the Mondeo for me but the Edge model is the base model with little or no creature comforts.

I'd try and find a Zetec like this one instead:

The Vectra is a bit pricey however the mileage is very low. I seen a few on Autotrader.UK a good bit cheaper.

I can buy it for £7400 I am leaning towards the Mondeo but I can't make up my mind the only thing I have against the Mondeo is the mileage

Just on the reliability issue, i had an 06 vectra and put up 150k km. It was a petrol model but the only issues i had in that time was one window regulator and one rear shock going.

A guy I worked for was a field service engineer who ran his own business and clocked up spaceship mileages travelling between various sites and the office.

He always bought fords, but got a good deal on a vectra a few years ago.
The car was an utter disaster, constantly breaking down and not starting. Many a time it came back on a recovery truck and each time it was something horribly expensive that had gone wrong. The build quality of the running gear was shockingly bad. It went through a couple of head gaskets, had a complete engine change and an appetite for starters and alternators.
It was so bad that he passed the car to his wife who did very small mileage and he went off and bought a diesel focus.
The trouble with the vectra continued and in the end the focus was passed on to her and he bought himself a new, current shape mondeo.
In either of the fords, nothing outside servicing parts has ever needed to be changed. The focus presently has 230k miles on it, with the 08 mondeo approaching 100k kilometers.
The vectra, when it was offloaded had around 100k miles on the clock.
Admittedly, the vectra was an older late 90's one, but was relatively new at the time.
Perhaps they've improved quality control since then, or his one was just a lemon, who knows. However, seeing how often it broke down and failed to start, I personally wouldn't gamble on another.
