Arriving from New Zealand

    Hi All,

My partner is moving from New Zealand to Dublin soon. I'm from Dublin originally but lived over there for the last 3 years. As a result, I'm not sure what to expect for him re job prospects.

He worked as an engineer/manager for a road working company while in New Zealand, but I know that there are plenty of Irish civil engineers who are in need of work at the moment.

He knows this and so he's not fussy about what job he can get. But are there any jobs going at all ? I mean are there jobs like cleaning, stocking shelves, taking orders ?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Why in name of all thats holy, is you OH coming to Ireland from New Zealand to look for work?

It's obvious theres no jobs here hence the 450,00 on the dole.

TBH - I wouldn't look to come here, unless it's somewhere like Dublin.

Why not compromise and head to the UK instead?

I've just returned from NZ to Ireland too. I am a retail manager with ten years experience but was doing admin in NZ. It was much harder than i expected coming home. Went for a job with Tesco who advertise jobs that don't actually exist. Other than than I've had nothing from over 100 applications.
I ended up getting work in NI where i'm from. Jobs are much healthier up here. Depending on his visa, I would consider it. Try to stay with family until one of you gets work so you aren't restricted with work. You can't be fussy at all but if you want to work, try hard enough and are flexible, you can get it.

If it wasn't for our visas expiring, my gf and I would DEFINITELY have stayed in NZ!

    I'm a civil engineer.

There is no work here in this field.

I'm not exaggerating in any way whatsoever. What few jobs there are out there are for those with 10-15 years experience in absolutely everything, at high levels in companies, and they're only there every now and again.

Check out the following sites for a quick look...

www.engineersireland.ie (jobs are under "About us" section)
    Www.jobs.ie - specify construction
    www.irishjobs.ie - specify construction
    www.monster.ie - specify construction

Look at what's there and it will give you a good idea.

As for jobs stocking shelves, etc...have looked at that too. There's so many people looking for jobs now that if you have any qualifications/training, most of those types of jobs won't bother even interviewing you, as they figure that you're overqualified and you'll be gone at the first chance you get. I have been out of work for nearly a year now, and with hundreds of applications to all sorts of jobs, I'm having no joy at all.

I am genuinely not joking here, nor am I exaggerating. Construction and civil engineering have been absolutely decimated in this country. Combined with a huge over-supply of engineers due to the boom, there are hardly any jobs out there (as in, about 2 every month) and those that are, there's massive competition for. He would, to be honest, be making a very big mistake to come here with a background like that and try and get a job.

If you can manage it, I would suggest going to the UK, as things are a bit better there. Having said that, a huge number of Irish engineers are gone that way too, so I'm not sure how easy it would be for him to get a job there either.

Sorry to be so depressing about the whole thing, but there just aren't enough jobs here.

    Yup!!

I rarely say this, but I think the OP's OH would be mad to come here to look for a job...

Stay in NZ ! I can't understand anyone who would come here at this time - I appreciate people can miss their native country , family , friends, etc and while it may initially feel great to be home that feeling will wear off pretty quickly when you realise there is absolutely nothing here workwise for you.

Thanks for the replies everyone :).

No, he won't be looking for anything in engineering/construction- as I said in my first post, we are aware of the situation.

Thats the plan anyway- I mean, to stay with my parents. I could never bring myself to spend money on rent in Dublin even during the boom :\

Tesco advertise jobs that don't exist- thats......I'm not sure what to think about that.

Thats the info I was looking for. Its going to be tough going even for retail/bar/restaurant work.

I probably would stay put in NZ given the situation but in this case I have to move home- not just for the home sickness and the partner is coming, despite the shocking state. We can better prepare ourselves for whats coming now.

    Really appreciate the info
