I got a notion to check my Dads oil today. Mazda 6 2.2L Diesel with 11k on the clock. The oil was only a few mm above the low marker. I looked it up and the spec is very strict for these basically you need to use ACEA C1 spec oil which limits you to genuine Mazda Dexelia DPF oil or Shell Helix Ultra Diesel. Neither are available anywhere on a Saturday evening.

The best I could find was Shell Helix Ultra extra 5w30 which is ACEA C2/3 spec. It's a very similar spec just has "marginally higher SAPS limits". I put in 500mls which brings it to the middle of the max min. I'm just concerned that these engine are so fussy about the DPF at the best of times that it might not be a good idea to leave it in there. Anyone service mazda diesels? Is it really essential to use the Dexelia?

At the end of the day it's only 500 mls added to 4L so I doubt it would be an issue. He is going to ring the dealer Monday and see what they say but I'd be interested if anyone had any thoughts.

Why didn't you wait till Monday to top it up? Unless of course your dad is gonna drive a thousand miles tomorrow :D

5w/30 would be correct as in Castrol edge or Mobil 1.

He has to drive around 300km tomorrow and about 100km Monday before he could get to the dealer! It was basically on the low line, I wouldn't be at all happy with it that low...

Nope, not necessarily. The Mazda specific oil is the best bet, all diesels are fussy these days, but the Mazda diesels are a little bit more fussy.
Some people love to just post up that they're crap though and then go and recommend the wrong oil!

I agree with you there. I searched the Castrol site and entered all the cars details and it told me refer to techical. The Mobil website recomends Mobil 1 ESP formula 5w/30. http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LCW/carengineoils_which-oil.aspx

I would say a lot of engine and DPF problems are down to incorrect oil.

If the modern diesels are really that fussy, God help anyone buying a used one 7 or 8 years down the line. The majority of them will have been filled with the cheapest oil available (with no regard for suitability) if the owner bothered to look under the bonnet all.

Even that Mobil 1 isn't quite upto the spec they require. Very fussy.

Well he phoned them this morning. They said they only use the Mazda Dexelia stuff in them but they were happy enough with putting in 500mls of the Shell helix ultra and said it wouldn't be an issue with such dilution. It's due a service soon enough anyway so he is going to get it done a bit earlier and pick up a spare bottle of Dexelia when he does.

i know this thread is 8 months old but anyways. i work for a mazda dealer and deal with these cars daily. as long as the oil level is above the min mark then its perfectly fine, the cars come like this brand new from the factory. you will find that the oil level may rise, this is caused by the dpf regeneration and is perfectly normal.
the oil we use is Mazda Dexelia 5W30 DPF to acea c1 and jaso dl1 specifications, however if you need to top up then any good quality full synthetic 5w30 oil will be fine. have it serviced by your mazda dealer every 15000km and make sure the filter is regenerated.

same deal with anything from about 06 on with dpf. service every 15000km or 9000miles and have the dpf regenerated. its standard practice for us to do it and we don't get many cars with dpf problems.
