Just wondering why it is illegal to sell irish army gear or for anyone other than someone serving to wear it when brittish army dpm is so widely avaliable? Would most armies gear be copyrighted like the pdf or would most be like the brittish?

Probably, because even thoguh you take it home, its still property of the state.
Also you don't want people with less than noble purposes getting their hands on it, imagine the trouble they could cause, fake check points, cash in transit attacks etc

the main reason why it is illegal are 1 they dont want the ira up on the border prentending to be irish troops and then ambushing and attacking britsh troops or the psni and 2 is to stop someone or a group like the ira going into a barracks and stealing weapons and equipment it is pretty obvious when u think about it britsh is so widly available as there army is so big compared to ours so theres a lot more surplus brits stuff knocking around with regards to copyrighted gear it all depends on the armys size the irish stuff is copyrighted

the main reason is actually an offence under military law under section 155 and 157 of the Defence Act 1954, to dispose of property, plus of course good old section 168.
(yeah ex p.a:D, the natives on here will know what i mean,:))

It's all to do with the IRA, fear of them dressing up as Irish soldiers and getting up to nasty things, or infiltrating barracks and getting their hands on Irish army weapons. It's largely and obsolete rules these days. But it lingers on.

The maddest thing about it, was back in the eighties. The FCA could wear any combination of British, German, American, Italian or anything vaguely military in and out of any barracks in the country with nary a comment, but wear an Irish army uniform and you were in big trouble, assuming anyone wanted to enforce the absurd law.

I wore an Irish army combat trousers and most of my comrades had one form or another of Irish uniform that wasn't issued to them.

The maddening absurdity of it was that a member of the Irish defence forces could be charged with the wearing of an Irish army uniform on the basis that it was not issued to him. But he could openly wear any item of a foreign uniform while on duty and no one would think twice.

    Only in Ireland!

LOL, more like a guerrila outfit like... well the IRA! I went with the Brit look, the Irish combats were direct copies of old green British combats, teamed with US para trousers at first. Later the US army supplied most lads combats. The trick with getting away with wearing an Irish uniform was to rip out the labels and get rid of the FF stamp that was on all Irish combats. Strategically placed ink stains did the trick. The only time I saw the rule enforced was when a silly Airman in Monaghan barracks sold one of his pouches to one of our guys. He was found out and got a fine and a night in the guardroom cell for his trouble. The following night he was back only this time with a rifle on guard duty. He was back in the same cell fast asleep as soon he finished his stint on the beat.

They belong to the state, and you are handling stolen property. That said, I would have done the same myself.

As already said the Irish DPM pattern is copyrighted and only select companies are allows to produce clothing/rucksacks/etc using the pattern.

It is illegal to wear clothing issued to you while not on duty, this means pants, shirts and smocks. In saying that i bought a few items (rucksack and A5 notebook holder) in Irish DPM pattern, produced by protac, my question is am i allowed use these outside in civi street? i'm a cpl in the reserve.

I have their assault vest and day sack and I use them for airsoft because they are NOT Irish DPM they are French Centrle European dpm the area in which the french made is similar to the curragh where the irish dpm was made. The main difference is the yellow sandy collour which is not on Irish uniforms besides you bought it its yours

I have their daysack and TAM cover - they are most certainly not French pattern. The pattern is the same as the Irish issue and the colour is virtually the same; the light green of the uniform is however more of a creamy/yellow on the Protac stuff.
