What SPF do you wear?

    Honestly?

I used to be terrible at remembering that I'm fair-skinned. I have quite dark hair and eyes so my teenage years were spent under the misguided assumption that my skin would tan nice and quickly. Really, every year Id make the same mistake.

However after a bad case of burnt legs and bum I changed. Now I wear factor20 on my body the whole summer through, when its sunny obviously. I do get a colour eventually...

But today was my first time buying really high stuff for my face. My poor nose bears the brunt of all burn on my face and even extra because of reflection from sunglasses. I got spf50. Is this a tad ridiculous? Not even as a child did i wear spf this high.

I do think Im becoming more aware of sun damage. Several people close to me have has scares due to sun damage recently. Early evening beer gardens trick me every time though... I forget that the sun can still get me when Im drinking beer and out for the night.

So, after that ramble, what spf do you wear out and about? Or do you only waer suncream at the beach or on hols? Does your face get a different spf?

My make up as an SPF of 15 so I wear that all year around on my face. I only wear sun cream on the rest of my body if it's very hot and I'm out and about, otherwise I never bother. I think it's pretty important to have it on your face though ageing wise.

I would wear it if I remember as I don't want colour or damage and I'm very fair!
I don't know what spf though, probably at least 20

I use La Roche-Posay factor 50 on my body during the summer months. They have a SPF 50 especially for the face which i use everyday rain or shine!

I wear a minimum of 30 and my SIL's laugh at me. However they're 8 and 10 years older than me and in their younger days used to lie in the sun covered in baby oil and now the damage shows. So they can laugh all they like. At least I won't look like a handbag by the time I'm in my forties!

Wasn't there some studies done on 50+, saying that it's bad to use it too much because it blocks all sun from the skin, sun on the skin being necessary for vitamin D production.

TBH you would need to be a recluse to become deficient even using a 50+ dosen't block the sun rays totally..

If I'm going to be outside in the sun for more than a few minutes at a time in summer I wear factor 50 (Vichy or Ambre Solaire) on my face and neck and big freckles, 30 on my chest, and if it's a particularly sunny day or if I'm out a long time I put 30 on my arms and legs. I never really get a tan or burn on my limbs so they must be pretty well able to take the sun, but I always put it on the rest of me on sunny days or holidays. Generally I'm not outdoors that much (work from home) so I don't put it on everyday, although my foundation is SPF 15. I have sensitive eyes so have to wear BIG sunglasses so no sun hits them, which protects the skin around my eyes too, win win.

Irish people don't seem to understand the concept of the SPF, how pale our skin is and how quick it burns. I have friends who moved to Oz and insisted on wearing no more than Factor 10, of course they got scalded. SPF 10 means they can stay out 10 times longer than the burning time on that particular day, so if burning time is 15 minutes, they can stay out for 150 mins, yet Irish people always seem to think "Sure I'll be grand" when they stay out for 8-10 hours with this level of protection? I don't understand that mentality at all.

Edit: Oh also my mother always wears the same kind of factors as me, she's 52, I'm 26, and we were asked three times last Monday if we were sisters, she looks about 40.

My makeup has spf15 too, but its like having nothing at all on if im in the sun with it. Maybe it melts off but thats the point isnt it? If its that hot, you need the protection?

Yeah my mum and aunt were part of the baby oil brigade too and it shows now. I do not want skin like that when Im older!

It's recommend that SPF no lower then 30 for the face daily..I wouldn't depend on a makeup that has added spf (which is really only a pea size amount added to the bottle) to protect the face.

Daily, I use a moisturiser with SPF 15, but if I could find a moisturiser with a higher SPF that didn't irritate my skin I'd prefer it.

When I'm going out on a sunny day, or am going to be outside for a long time on a normal day, I wear factor 50. I can't put it on my face everyday though as I break out in spots.

Edit: I just realised, I changed moisturisers a while ago; I've been unprotected! Thanks for making me think of it :)

It has to be specifically made for the face as the others that you would use on your body would be way to thick!

I wear 50 where I have scars and 30 elsewhere. I really should use it more on my face. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good face sun cream?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭tan11ie

I use La Roche - Posay. It's pricey though.

Whatever you buy just make sure it is broad Spectrum and specifically for your face.

50 on my face and 30 everywhere else! No chance of me getting burnt! I'm of the pale gingery variety so I need all the help I can get.

great topic, so many people take risks for a tan that lasts a few weeks:(
i do tan easily but i wear spf everyday, although i wear hat and glasses if its very hot so my face never sees sun really (yes my little brother has a great laugh when he sees me coming:D i have a great laugh when people guess hes older than me;))... the lancome face spfs are brilliant, pricey but last ages and i find dont clog

I have to say I do always wonder if it really is possible to get a factor higher than 20, really. I have always been the pale burny type..scalded a few times as a young one. I use SPF all year on my face, and started wearing Piz Buin spf 15 once a day (one application lasts a day) and I have never ever burnt, not even a hint?

Highly recommend the stuff, not at all greasy like some of the stuff I have tried

Everyone is different, really boils down to skin type on how quick you burn.

I'm a redhead and don't burn easily i actually get a golden tan if i was to sunbathe.I don't sunbathe anymore though not worth it IMO.

I use SPF 50 on my hands, neck, boobs and face. I'm so scared of getting one of those crinkly crepe paper necks.
Then I use SPF 15 all over, the rest of my body isn't exposed but I always try to have an SPF on.
If I thought I'd be getting my legs or anything I'd use SPF 30 at least.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,189 ✭✭✭Ophiopogon

I work outside a lot of the time so I wear factor 20 in the winter and factor 50 in the summer. I still have a great tan due to the amonut of time I spend outside. I also always reapply a couple of times a day.

My mother has amazing skin for someone in their 60's and she belives it is due to her always using high factor suncream even when it was the fashion to crisp your skin. I know one of my friends mothers is a true sunworshipper but her chest honestly looks like leather and also os always slighty red and she is only in here 50's. That would be my biggest nightmare for my skin so I will always remember to put it on, have just work it into my morning routine.

I wear factor 30 on my face almost every day, even on those rare days when it's not sunny(!) It's a soltan one especially for the face that is supposed to last 8 hours.
I would usually only wear sun-cream on my body on a warm sunny day or on a sun holiday because I usually wear long sleeves and trousers the rest of the time.

I have been in some pretty hot countries where I didn't bother wearing sun cream on my arms/legs and my skin would remain as pale as ever. I think that often made me a bit lack-luster when it came to sun protection abroad! :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭tomissex

I use 30 all over on the very hot days here and 50 when I'm abroad. The pain of sunburn can ruin a holiday so now I don't risk it at all. I know I won't tan so what's the point! (damn pale Irish skin... :p)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Hedwig

I would normally wear factor 20 during the summer but when I'm abroad I'd wear factor 30, as someone else said, it just ruins the holiday if you get burnt! My legs and arms tan through factor 20 but my face just doesn't seem to tan AT ALL which is slightly annoying having a tanned (ish :P) body and a white face lol

Whenever I'm skiing though I'd make sure to have 50+ on every day whether its blazing sun outside or a blizzard. A few years ago I got pretty badly burnt just below my lips and it hurt like hell and I had an awful cut there for weeks and weeks. Although in a way it was a good thing to happen to me as I'm soo careful now with applying suncream as I've experienced what can happen if you miss a spot!

As for my face I use Revlon PhotoReady foundation which has SPF 20. I try to use a high SPF everywhere. I mainly use SPF 30 but when I have extra cash I'm going to get something with SPF 50.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭kandr10

Just bought factor 50+ by PizBuin. In Hickeys pharmacies they were half price. Looking out for a 50+ face suncream. Don't want anything too sticky or greasy. Might try Vichy. Once it has absorbed into the skin is it ok to apply makeup on top? do you still get full protection?
I defo wouldn't be relying on the spf of 15 that's in my foundation and moisturiser to protect my face. Some pharmacies are only stocking suncreams of factor 30+ cos that's what's recommended by the Irish cancer society. Can't be too careful.

I use dior face spf 30. its perfect. goes on very smooth, doesn't make me look ghostly white or clog. Its the only face spf i've tried though so i don't know what else is out there

to top up i found a pressed powder thats spf 25, i dust it on my face a couple of times during the day over my make up, its the only thing i've found that works over make up to give more spf. its dior forever

i'd be really interested if anyone else has other options to topping up on spf over make up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I don't wear sunscreen at all. I think my foundation is SPF 15 but my moisturiser definitely doesn't have sun protection factor. I'm not very fair skinned and I don't tend to burn easily. I never even think of sun cream in Ireland. :o

I use the hamilton sun protection i posted earlier. It actually comes like a mist of spray, I highly recommend it, haven't come across any other spray like it! dosent ruin your make up as no need for rubbing.

I use factor 50 Avene on my face and generally nothing on my body unless I am outside a lot.

I have heard a bit about the report on Vitamin D and wearing face creams-apparantly Australia has a very high rate of skin cancer and it's suggested that it's not because it's a sunny place, but rather because of the amount of sunscreen they use. No idea if this has any merit as it could just be scare mongering.

My tinted moisturizer is SPF 15 and I also wear this on my face when its sunny

    Screen-shot-2010-02-17-at-19.07.42.png

I have uneven skintone and am very pale. I don't wear sun cream on my body because I avoid the sun and usually cover my arms.

I find it great i just keep it in my handbag and spray whenever i need it through out the day obliviously more throughout a sunny day. I find it hydrating too just like spraying a mist of water on your face so dosen't ruin your makeup like the creams would!

Have a look on page two (i think) i posted a pic of the bottle, it comes in factor 30 broad spectrum. It's a wee bit pricey at €18 but i've yet to find a better mist SPF. Selected chemists sell it and Brown Thomas has a full range.

Ive only started recently, never thought of using a spf daily in Ireland tbh, but I use a moisturiser with spf 25 and I bought La Roche Posay face suncream spf30 aswell that I wear on sunny days on my neck chest and face. Going to upgrade to the spf50 the next time I buy it-wasnt in stock the last time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭lubie76

SPF50 in summer and SPF30 in winter. I have been doing this since I was 20 when I worked in cosmetics company in Jersey and saw how all the older french women had perfect skin from wearing sun factor year round. I am 35 now and haven't a trace of a wrinkle. People tell me all the time I only look 25. Don't know if its true but I choose to believe it :D
