I was having a chat with some friend last night about our first memories.
We all proceeded to go around the room and they all had one from being ages 3-8.
I thought this was crazy, I can't remember anything in particular from even a few weeks ago.
    Do you have one?

A woman running down the front path with her hands over her mouth (neighbor I think - might be my ma).

My finger was caught in the door but I couldn't feel anything. Then the door opens and I start to ball my eyes crying.

Still have the scar from when the top of my finger was crushed. Luckily it healed and no permanent damage B)

Fell asleep on the way to my grandmother's, I woke up in the car parked outside her house. I was alone and strapped into the baby seat, began bawling my eyes off for what felt like an eternity until my parents came back.
No idea what age I was but I must of been young since I was trapped in a baby seat.

Mine was either my third birthday and I was on the verandah of our house eating ice cream out of a little bowl with a matching spoon I had got as a gift.

I remember my mum coming out the door and I was sitting there, legs dangling, scoffing the ice cream.:pac::pac::pac:

Going swimming. I remember going through blue cubicle doors, walking on a cement / concretey floor and the water being freezing. At the end of the pool there was a big high diving board and I remember being very scared of it. It was in the lee baths in Cork, a big outdoor pool, it closed when I was 3 so I was probably three.

I was about two years old, I woke up in my cot, took one look around the dark room and started crying. The babysitter came up and took me downstairs to the sitting room with my brother and sister.

Being 3 and sneaking away from my mother to get on my sister's tricycle to hit the road to my granny's gaff. 3 miles on some pretty busy roads and any adults that stopped to ask if I was ok, I just told them I was fine thanks and where I was going. I got biscuits and milk and my da came and collected me in the car after work, so totally great day out for me.

Funnily enough, my twin used to climb into my cot all the time. Also, that's my first memory.

It's not very clear, but it's from when I was 4.

We were on holiday in Wales and my brother's tooth fell out there and the Josephine (that was the tooth fairy's name in our house) left an English pound under his pillow. I remember us all standing around staring at it wondering what it was.

Being in a pram with the water cover over cause it was raining and going down Patrick's street in Cork.

I can remember the cover being all bubbly with water and lots and lots of legs.

My first memory is of my mother taking me to see someone speak at the Royal Hotel in Bray. I just remember going through the entrance and playing with some other kids inside.

When I told my mother about a while back, she told it was on International Women's Day in 1991 so I was a few weeks short of my third birthday. That seems pretty early.

Being in a white cot in the box-room and my 3 year old sister in a blue one next to me, that means I was 1. Also remember baths in the kitchen sink must have been up to about 2. First day of school is as clear in my memory today as it was back then too.

Getting a cyst out of my throat aged 2, then getting a horrific sunburn on a sunbed in Sicily about a month later.

Then a long, long gap to my first day at school.

Memories are just constructs of a few keyword events. I can remember falling down the stairs when I was younger but even the image your imagination thinks up when you read this is about as viable as my 'memory'. Me - Young - top of stairs - six am - falling. Then my mind just thinks it up. I can't think of any details about the scenario at all really. Hell, I mightn't have fallen down the stairs at all! Someone could have just told me that I did when I was seven, and now, several years later I can't remember them telling me but I can 'remember' falling down the stairs.

I'm a horrible pedant and I'm in a horribly philisophical mood; or as it was once put: "I feel like I'm going to walk around for the rest of the day asking questions like, 'why should i get up?' and 'define "dinner."'"

    Three levels of quotation!

Billy Joel and Uptown Girl on the radio while I was standing up my cot.

Or watching a load of adults crowded around looking in at me in the pram, I'm not sure which was first.

I have a good few memories from playschool when I was 3/4, including learning the irish for wardrobe (cofra), singing xmas songs (and meeting santa), that apple game from halloween and being bitten by another kid cause I was playing with whatever she wanted. I also have a rather strange memory of watching home and away with the mother from about the same time.

I can remember being around 2 years old, sitting in the back seat of my grandad's Datsun 120Y, staring down at the road through a tiny hole in the floor. I've no idea why I can remember this.

Standing up in what I now know to be a classroom of leaving cert students, all of whom at the time seemed like actual giants, as my Mum (who is a maths teacher) was shouting at some guy for disobedience.

She used to pick my sister and I from primary school at 12pm on Fridays and we would spend the rest of the afternoon watching spotty faced 17 year olds trying to learn theoroms. If a teacher did that now it would probably cause a minor Joe Duffy hysteria.
