same type of redpoll?

    I took the first pic below in Jan 2010, had never seen a redpoll before and thought it looked the same size as a chaffinch.
    The second pic is from this year and there are a few redpolls around but they seem tiny compared to the one I saw last year.
    Some books say there is a common redpoll and lesser redpoll but Im not sure if we have both in Ireland?

    im no expert but i would think in the first pic the redpoll was just "puffing" out his feathers because of the extreme cold.

    alot of birds do this.

    i would say its the same species.
