HI, im applying to study law at Maynooth next year and was hoping someone could help me choose the best course. I currently have Bachelor of laws LLB as my first choice and Law with arts BCL as my second choice. Is this the best order or would law with arts be a better degree to have at the end? thanks.

I'm about to graduate BCL Law and economics. The BCL is now three years old and the LLB is shiny and new.

The BCL is a law degree augmented by an arts subject. It is recognised by both the law society and King's inns. You take two arts subjects in and choose one to keep. In second year you take 30 credits of law and 30 credits in your chosen arts subject. (50/50 split)

The LLB is pure law. You take 60 credits a year. It is also recognised by the relevant insititutions.

An LLB is a better law degree. The BCL is a more versatile degree.

As a prospective Kings inns student I wish I had the option of doing the LLB but I would not knock the versatility of the BCL or as its status as a law degree.

Also I would warn anyone about to comment on this thread that some of the lecturers do watch this board.

p.s there's more information if you search this board.

I suppose it depends on what you're interested in really - the LLB is pure law, whereas with Law and Arts you'll do another subject with it. If you want a career in law, either would be fine I imagine.

I suppose if you're not 100 per cent sure on law, the one with arts would be best as you could drop it after first year. Or you could pick a second subject which would help with job prospects e.g. a language. That's just my opinion though; don't do either course!

I would agree with retroactive. If given the choice I would have picked the LLB however I do love the fact that I got to do History with my law degree.

The LLB will offer more module options that the BCL as it is Pure law which currently only offers the required modules.

If you have any questions on law feel free to ask!

    P.S. retroactive - which lecturers?!
PM me if you could! :P

XxMCRxBabyxX, I know our esteemed Dr. Sibo Banda and Dr. Maddox lurk and I would hazard a guess that they're may be others.

I wouldn't worry so much about optional modules. While it is a feature of the BCL (at the moment) that there are no optional modules, the required modules are covered and this will suffice. For example, Contract and Company are covered and thus there is no need to cover Business Law and Tort covers vast areas of private law, such as occupiers liability and environmental torts.

Furthermore, the reality of practicing means you will be searching for laws not covered in any college degree. You will likely specialise in an area and become very familiar with it through 'on the job learning.'

Norrdeth, while your right that the correct place to ask questions is that thread - both the BCL and the especially the BBL are not common knowledge among the student population. I cannot tell you how many time I have heard "Maynooth do law now?" from NUIM and other students and perhaps starting a thread such as this (for the LLB) would be a faster and more beneficial way of reaching law students. In relation to the BCL they're have been other threads on it (precedent for starting new law course threads :P)

No need for the stalkerish behavior! :P
And the pointing out of who I am! Even though most know anyway! :D

I wasn't complaining as much as just making the point! I love my degree! :)

And after a week I'm already learning that! :D

And I would completely agree about the whole "Maynooth does law?" thing! It has been said numerous times to me!
We need to get the name out there!
