Just wondering, can the standard clutch on a mkv gti handle a basic remap to approx 240 hp?

I've heard that no upgraded parts are needed, just wondering if anyone here has any experience.

    Cheers.

It will be fine. All depends how you drive the car generally. I had my MkV gti remapped by Martin at Autoremap to 240hp and had no issues whatsoever. But then I didn't thrash the car about. Loved the extra torque, especially in the higher gears.

Are you planning on remapping that gti with the no service history OP?

Good to hear. I heard some reports that the the clutch in the manual may not be up to the job.

Hmm..yes, I am thinking of the one without the history.

I had the car in with vw yesterday, paid them to give it a full going over .

I told them the issues, they got back to me and said that despite the very late oil change, the engine sounded very quiet/ smooth, no signs of damage, and that it looked like a " very straight example" that wasn't trashed.

    Bad points :

Full diagnostics was all good apart from a fault coming up in the ignition switch.

    Clutch felt stiff..

    Im tempted.

Generally speaking the standard clutch will be ok but it really depends on how the car has been cared for. I assume, with those numbers, that it's a MKV you're talking about? If so they are a wee bit stronger than the previous models and can handle the remap that bit better

    Hi Gary,

Yep , it's a mkv with about 35000 miles on it.

Does the basic remap produce 240?or 250bhp?

We don't like to pull numbers out of the sky, we tune on the dyno so it's down to how the car performs on the day but I'd say closer to 240 than 250. You must remember though that is only a peak figure, a remap will give you increased power across the rev range

    I see, thanks.

Where are you based, and how much do you charge? Is it a generic map for the gti?

I have read that the dsg can't handle the extra power as well, I've also read the opposite, the the manual can't handle it as well..any truth to these claims?

Once the car is maintained properly it should be ok. Of course adding extra power is going to put extra stress on components if you're hammering it around all of the time but in general they are fine.

We are Dublin based and it's Joe Power that does the VAG mapping in our place

Joe Power is excellent at remapping VAGs in fairness. I didn't get it done yet but I was up with him for something else. I asked him about the clutch and he was very confident the standard clutch would be up for it. He was saying that he very rarely sees clutch problems after a remap. Obviously if the clutch is weak a remap will show it up more but in general terms the GTI is 100% able to handle a remap to 240-250bhp. Loads and loads of them are done and there are very few issues arising from it.

Wouldn't it need ecu for remaping? Or some piggyback you using lads?

Interested how much that remap costs. Is it proper RR job?

The stock ECU in VAG cars can be remapped handily enough.

We map on a RR :)

Slightly off topic but just out of interest how does the dsg handle remaps in comparison to a standard manual gti?

    Just as well.
