Well for me it has to be John Williams.

As a kid growing up in the '70's, it was all disco and rock n roll. However, after Williams' opening score for Star Wars in 1977, I was hooked on symphonic music, movie and classical alike.

After Star Wars, there was Close Encounters, Superman, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Return of the Jedi, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List and loads more besides.

Whatever about the quality of the movies themselves, John Williams scores raised them all a notch or two.

The late Jerry Goldsmith certainly ran Williams close, but no other current movie composer can get anyway near what Williams has achieved.

The best of the current crop is perhaps Hans Zimmer, even he has not composed themes that have gone into the public consciousness the way Williams scores have, though Zimmer's 'Pirates' theme is perhaps closest.

I've been humming some of the pieces from A Beautiful Mind (James Horner) for a few days now.

James horner is sublime in his music! I love that guy!
Oh and Howard shore! Sheesh! Mind you he had a massive blank canvas to work on in LOTR but hell did he knock it out of the park!

And though I don't think he's the best composer Danny Elfman definitly scores the soundtrack to the (independant!) movie that is my life!
