Sex Islands

Now that I have your attention!

Imagine two islands with boundless resources.
50 females are dropped onto one and 50 males onto the other.
No interaction will ever take place between the two islands.

    Here's the rub.
Both populations can reproduce, but only their own sex.

Assume that both populations have ample resources and that there will be no overpopulation.

What do you think each island's society would be like several generations hence?

Would each island's population develop male and female 'duties'?

The male island society would be like a cockfest i'd imagine.

    Serious answer:
There would no longer be male or female duties, there would be just duties.

It would be interesting to see the statistics for the duties which we would historically interpret as male or female duties, for each island however.

And if instinct would have a bearing over those statistics.

Male island: Wars. And lots of them.
Female island: Wars. And lots of them. (Only this time, over shoes!)

Would the wars on the male island be physically violent?
Would the wars on the female island be verbal?

Depends. are they modern day versions of the sexes or we talking 1000 years ago versions?

Either way, I reckon the women will have a better island. Women seem very good at the administration side of things and generally work well together. Men on the other hand will probably spend their time fighting, trying to develop some form of drug and then trying to train the native fauna into becoming some form of servant.

I'd say give it 200 years and women will have a nice system and men will probably be extinct :D

    - modern.
    Does that make any difference?

I reckon you are right. The men would devastate the island in their search for a drug. Then they would devastate it even more to process the drug. Until finally, they completely denude the island having used every single branch as a weapon to protect their drugs.
The women would become senior bond holders.

Diet. That could be one of the biggest differences and could play a large part in how each population would impact on the islands.
Would the men search for meat and hunt everything to extinction, while the women would cultivate some very nice vegetable gardens?

Hard to say. If the men and women are straight and no sexual selection pressure is afoot and the population is controlled(no overpopulation), then it would probably go down to food and shelter selection pressures? Hierarchies would kick off regardless of gender, then jostling within that structure. Women are just as socially competitive as men. Indeed in one way more so, in that their hierarchies can be more fluid over time. How might this pan out? I'd reckon the men would settle into a power level pretty quickly but possibly more violently. Status quo might last longer when the dust had settled. The women would be more in flux if outwardly more stable and less violent. It's a real hard one to call though, because without mate selection pressures or reproductive pressures in general you're taking out a big chunk of what makes societal interactions tick.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

There isn't much belief in this thread that men can create civilizations. In fact they have, and only have, historically created civilisations ( by which I mean any society with rules which doesn't decay into anarchy).

We have no idea if women will produce a civilization or not in these circumstances; however men will create some kind of hierarchy pretty fast and would be fairly rigid with it.

In any case the OP assumes ample resources and no-overpopulation. This bodes well for both societies survival. The only sample we have - male dominated societies with ample resources without external threats - is that they get on pretty well.

Strange, all this self deprecation by men (?) with the exception of one post.

    So far,
the men have created a rigid hierarchy, the women have created a more fluid hierarchy but in appearance only.
Prior to this hierarchical construction there were wars on the male island (cause uncertain - possibly drug related) and there was a war over shoes on the female island.
    Before the wars,
records are scarce for the female island, but there was a cockfest on the male island.

I posted in here a couple of days ago and forgot to mention how disappointed I was that we were discussing "gender islands" not "sex islands"

    :(

Men only island will be like the blue oyster. Women only island destroyed by cataclysmic bitchfest 28 days after creation.

yay. Battle of the sexes thread :D!

I think that knowing that there will never be men around would have an effect on women. No longer being perpetually stuck as weaker members of society there's no reason some of the bigger/stronger women would not adopt physical dominance as a legitimate strategy in the competition for resources, especially if things get ugly. What's weird is if this happens, would passive-agressive bitchiness become less socially acceptable as a result?
Basically without men around, would women become a lot more like them?

Whether or not things get ugly on either island i don't think is sex-related. It's more up to the individuals involved. Some groups of men are great, some groups of men are ****. Same goes for women.

What do you mean by 'weaker members of society'? - Genuine question.

I don't know about the rest of the lads but i'd make a boat and get myself over to the female island.
Not enough wood for a boat and the female island is too far away and you're not supposed to be aware of it anyway.

Step away from the beach young man!

the womens island would resemble lesbian porn:D

Seriously, it's probably impossible to consider this rationally.

I was expecting this to be about the likes of Ibiza, Ayia Napa and to a much lesser extent...the Virgin Islands :)

I would imagine there would be similar scenarios to what you find in prisons and same sex schools. The strong / popular try to control the weak, those of less social status for their own gains but with differences as there is no defined authority on either as there are in institutions.

I agree it would be more easy to spot the 'chiefs' in the male society, there would probably even be a few tribes created even a few Lord of the Flies violent scenarios, which would most likely trigger the manufacturing of weapons.

The females would not have such an obvious jostle for power, there may be one main group but no defined leaders, not for long anyway, more obvious subserviants, but there would also be a few smaller interchangeable groups and not as much violent conflict between them.

Both would be innovative in different ways. Once the whole food, water, shelter thing is down then it's anyones guess how creative either can be.

Oh and there would be ritualistic mass orgies on both of course :)

I need one more piece of information first. How does reproduction on the islands work exactly? Does it require two individuals to mate with each other (if so is who gestates the offspring a 50/50 chance? Does gestation {pregnancy} occur at all?) or is it asexual reproduction? This would be the defining piece of information which would determine the outcome imo.

Emmm......two individuals mate and either can gestate.

i forgot women dont take drugs, amy winehouse, kate moss etc. Id say both ireland would end up the same. certain men will take up certain roles and certain men will cater to them, which would leave a divide of men and 'bitches' and the same for the womens side
