Hey all,

I was wondering if it would be ok to post up my CV and cover letter and get peoples feedback on my layout and information.

Obviously in keeping with the charter, the personel information on this CV would be changed(dummy), but the quailfications and other information would be pretty much as it appears on my CV...maybe with names been changed.

If this would be ok, please let me know...If i am allowed to do this.

Cheers

Hey guys,

Thought I'd already uploaded my CV:(

I can't find my proper CV so I've just done one up from memory with some personnel information replaced with "xxx"

Waaaay too short on the details of the job. Expand on those responsibilities and talk them up a little. I tend to put the employment dates along with the job title / employer as it's easier to read.

If you insist on emailing it in PDF format, include a standard doc/rtf file as well.

Well I'd start by spelling 'curriculum vitae' correctly!

Disclaimer - I'm no expert on CVs or I'm not in a hiring position -

I'd have education and qualification next not job employment.

You're achievement section seems more like a hobby section -maybe combine the 2 in 4 bullet points

- Rugby championship winner - xx cc vv
- Soccer winner - aa, dd and all blah blah
- Raised blah amount for some poor country
- Like movies from xx year

Also you're reference section i'd have

Mr. John Doe..................... Lecturer..................LIT
......................................Marketing................Address
..................................................................#email

Mr. tony Doe............ Name of shop...............Shop Adress
...................................store owner.................Address
...................................................................#Number

And for you're personal details
i'd lay it all out on the side

Personal Details
Name: Mike Lowe...........................Address: 12 fake street,
Date Of Birth: 27/3/1988............................... Fake town,
Mobile: 11111111.........................................Fake county.
E-Mail: 11@11.com

No dots -

Edit for formatting issue

Hi there OP. I have had a look at your CV. Layout is ok but not enough detail!
Keep your hobbies as one line or just a few sporting activities but listing them maybe in one line. To be honest I would nearly leave it out focus more on your work-experience, college course(s), you may or may not need to include leaving cert grades, but if you have room add in your leaving cert year only, your points wouldn't be a major thing for a CV unless you are filling out an application that requests it, mention the year you have done your leaving cert would be recommended and the name of the school. Your final year in college is probably where you could include your modules, grades maybe and mention a few projects you did.

Its your college education, projects you have done and previous work-experience you would need to give more detail. You could keep in your achievements though, its worth adding that in rather than hobbies/interests. Add in a list of skills too in a few lines rather than listing them down, recommend having it as a line or paragraph.

just had a look at it for 20 seconds

main things that hit me was your only job

training.,.

training what... elephants?

you need to be more concise and outline achievments.. dealing with people and what you learned from it and so on.

the haiti thing was good.. (if it was real lol).

it needs a lot of work, i would have it in the bin, brush up on the job you have firstly.

I would put your 3rd level education above the 2nd, as it's more important.

Maybe it's common to put how many points you got in your leaving cert on a cv nowadays but I've never seen it before. Unless you got 600 points or something like that I would take it out.

do reference always have to be on the CV? or can you can just have reference upon request

• Closed Accounts Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭Nolanger

Get rid of the headings: Name, E-mail, Mobile. Empoyers should known what these are from reading.
Get rid of the 'th' after 27.
Get rid of the word 'proudly' in the Achievements section.
In Hobbies and Interests it's 1970s not 1970's.

I'd always have them on request.

Ignore recruiters who tell you otherwise, they're just looking to harvest the data.

But give them if any employer specifically asks for them.

I would always have a profile at the top of CV stating what you can bring to the company. 1st thing that they will read so will encourage employer to read on. I have just moved company so worked for me...

Your CV should be configured for each industry and more specifically each job role. Provide an example and we can advise accordingly.

Bargin is spot on. Imagine you're the recruiter for the particular job you're interested in & imagine what they would be looking for in a CV. Now make sure that your entire CV emphasises those attributes. Most hiring managers see 100s of CVs, they don't have time to read between the lines - your CV should sell you for the job, it's not meant to be the starting point for a biography of your life.

e.g. if you're going for another retail job, emphasise how you won the award for most diligent employee (or whatever), how you were given more responsibility over time etc etc

had a really quick look.

I've seen hundreds of CVs over the years.

So my 2c..

You have more in your hobbies interests section than you have written about your job.

It is your only employment ever - you need to plump it up!
Sentences rather than just titles/words.

Most recent college first going backwards to school.
ALWAYS most recent experience/education first - go backwards.

I always notice when referees are provided.

Depends what industry/business you are applying to but Ireland is a small country and often your referee can get you noticed, the person reading your CV may know of your referee and their reputation as a employer!

It also makes it easier for a potential employer to see straight up that they are there already - easy to see.

:)
