Ok so i got Zelda today and i cant decide whether to play in with 3d on or not. I mean it looks great with 3d on but i have to remain pretty much motionless in order to get the best effect. Not to mention such things as aiming in first person is actually easier to do while using the gyroscope but then the screen gets all messed up cause im not looking directly at it. i dont know what to do with it. I seem to be spending so much time fiddling around with it, its becoming quite annoying. Is anyone else turning off 3d while playing games?

Don't use 3D takes up battery life & Ocarina of time is the type of game you want to play hours at a time. I thought this game wasn't out for another week or am I wrong.

A friend works for a magazine so I usually get games a few weeks before release. I'm a bit annoyed the fact I bought a console which main feature is 3d gaming, yet you get a better gameplay experience by turning it off. I'd actually rather wear glasses if it meant eliminating that horrible parallaxing effect as soon as you move your head

How high have you got the 3D slider? For some games putting it up all the way doesn't really work. I know when I play Pilot Wings 50% 3D works perfect. Whereas Ghost Recon on the other hand goes 100% of the way up without any eye strain.

I actually only used 3d for about 20 minutes when i first got it with pilotwings/etc...the screens too reflective and i really don't like seeing my mug :pac:

Not missing anything with it off, didnt buy it for it....instead because it was the next generation handheld and there's some epic games coming out for it

So chances are it'll stay off for ocarina. :)

The reflectiveness of the top screen is one thing that drives me mad about the 3DS. In a certain type of daylight it reflects so much that as you said, you can see your mug. This is REALLY distracting for 3D and makes my eyes really not like it.

However the reflectiveness happens with the 3D on or off. It's more to do with the bezel around the screen than the screen itself.

What I do myself is turn 3D off whenever I'm out and about playing it on public transport in daylight and then when I get home and have a power supply handy 3D goes on.

Ah but with the 3D off you can hold the system at more of an angle which i prefer anyway :pac:

**EDIT**Sorry just read up there back to the N64 version I go!! Pity I wont ever buy a 3DS to see the scenery and landscapes on some decent hardware but I never minded the N64 scenery, my imagination filled in the pixels!

Can it be played on the normal DSi ?

Has the OP being enjoying playing the game a little earlier?

When I do get it, I'll be pumping that slider all the way up.
My eyes seem to be perfectly suited to the 3d. I've played the thing with the slider all the way up for about 6 hours straight and while my eyes were a bit tired afterwards, they weren't sore or anything like that.

I remember getting that game for my N64 back in college and it was easily the best thing I have ever played. Kinda still is to this day after playing my gamecube disk of it a few weeks ago in anticipation of this release.

So iv put a good few hours into the game now and i just love it!! I was hoping nostalgia wasnt playing a cruel trick on me but thankfully it wasn't and OOT is just as good as ever. Its been a good few years since iv played it but many things are still fresh in my head which is a bummer because im sailing through the game so far. I dont recall much of the later temples so im looking forward to playing them.

As for the 3d element, i have the slider about one third of the way up. The game doesn't work with it up full whack regardless of whether it agrees with you or not. For example with the slider all the way up, when you enter first person mode, anything that is near you becomes all distorted and causes that horrible parallax effect. So one third of the way was what i found worked best for me.

As for the game itself, everything has aged beautifully. Controls are still the same and work perfectly. Graphically the game looks much nicer, higher rez textures, better lighting, newer models. But one thing i found to be a little annoying is that all the areas are identical to the n64 version. What i mean by this is that they haven't tweaked anything in the slightest. I was hoping they would jazz up some areas and change a few things such as the buildings or even add in one or two new ones but iv yet to see anything. Basically the world of hyrule has been lifted directly out of the n64 version and just tarted up with nicer textures and so on. Which is a bit annoying for anyone expecting a complete revamp of the game.

So far im really enjoying it and cherishing every minute of it. There is something about playing through a game you love many years later and just been flooded with memories from years ago. Iv been playing the game with a huge smile on my face!!

On question i have to ask (i know many havent played the 3ds version yet) is whether people who have never played OOT will still regard this as one of the all time greats. Or is it simply regard as such due to when in was released back in 1997. When it first came out it was breath taking and beautiful. Full orchestrated soundtrack, lush landscapes, huge story, well paced, lovable characters. But today many of this is just.....well expected. So this is something im looking forward to seeing, whether the youth of today will play this game and think wow, that was one of the best games ever. Or will they simply think.... MEH

Ive never played OOT before and cant wait for friday! Ive never played ANY zelda game before until a few days ago when i downloaded links awakening for the 3ds. Jeepers, now im totally hooked! Then i bought twilight princess for the wii. Only played a bit coz i want to finish links first. Twilight princess is something else again!! Dont know why ive never played these games before. For some reason i thought they were aimed at kiddies. So, on friday ill have 3 zelda games on the go. Which one will i finish off first? A good problem to have. Roll on friday!!!!;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 956 ✭✭✭steve_

Id play through OOT first. Its only right seeing as it was the first 3d zelda and basically defined the foundation for future titles. So start there

Don't know about you but I'd deffo play Links Awakening first - it's either the best or second best 2-d Zelda, depending on my mood (SNES one being the other one) and lays the foundations for the lore and the type of universe you'll dive into in 3-d with OoT.

For a lot of people back in the day, they played SNES Zelda and fell in love with the universe portrayed...then when they saw it in 3-d, it blew their minds, not only because it was the best anyone had ever seen with regard to 3-d (it's competitors at the time included the original Tomb Raider), but because seeing Link run around a field with the Goran mountains in the background and the Castle looming overhead was just like we imagined it would be in our dreams after finishing the 2-d versions. I'd liken it to going to see the Lord of the Rings movie after reading the books - everything is so spot on, you can't help but smile.

D-Day tomorrow gents!! enjoy!! The only thing i didnt like about the game was the shiekah stones. They are like little tunnels you enter that give you visions of the future, or in other words tips on how to progress through the game.

I was thinking; would some kind of headstrap device make it easier to keep the 3D in direct focus but being able to move? Or some kind of pole connected to a hard hat?

I really wanna play this remake but the 3DS gives me headaches :( Pls lemme know how it goes in 2D :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 956 ✭✭✭steve_

to be honest iv been playing it in 2d. The 3d got annoying after a while. I enjoy playing the game vegged out on the couch or in bed and its just too arkward to keep my head perfectly inline with the screen. not to mention anti aliasing is not the 3ds's friend. With 3d on objects in the distant just look horrible and stand out a mile. So 2d is the way to go

Quick one - can you turn off the gyro controls?
I'd take comfy 3-d over having to move around like a spaz like when I play the face raiders game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭elWizard

Yes, you can turn off motion controls easily - just press Select and change the setting in Options. Just started it - sweet!

Won't be picking this up until tomorrow. Would buy it in Xtravision tonight but their trade in prices are pure sh*t.

Absolutely loving this at the moment. Haven't played the N64 game in a few years now and the 3DS experience has been fantastic. Just got through the Forest Temple and even the controls are just so much smoother than the N64 for was. I never got a chance to play Master Quest and I'm looking forward to that too but I can't imagine how they could make the Water Temple any harder!

Pretty sure that's not true (at least not significantly).

Haven't tested it myself, but all reviews of the 3DS itself I read that did, said 3D on/off doesn't make a significant difference to battery, only whether it was a 3DS game or DS game.

3D uses much more battery power than non 3D. I've tested it with my 3DS on Zelda and the battery only lasts anout 2 and 3/4 hours before the flash of doom and lasts for about 4 hours in 2D

3D on, all the time, unless someone is watching me play. Think it looks amazing, best 3DS capability demonstration software so far!
