Adding volume to hair

I've tried the drying my hair upside down thing and using a barrelled brush but my hair never has volume, it's fine and quite long and even with layers it's still flat at the crown which drags down my face! Anyone any suggestions please?

Just got the babyliss Big Hair yesterday and I think I'm in love. It's really good and I found it very easy to use.

Try adding a little volumising mousse to damp hair before blow drying.

just add a small amount of mose to your roots dry with a big barreled brush and back comb it to add volume.. and dont use conditioner it weighs the hair down.. i find head and shoulders is great shampoo for volume as it gets the hair really clean.. fades your colour though!

As a person with fine, long, flat hair - the mousse, blowdrying upside down and backcombing helps a little, but it's really not a good long-term solution. I find my hair's completely in bits as a result of it.

I'm considering getting the Babyliss Root Boost, but I don't know anyone who has one - the reviews on Amazon look good though. Maybe try something along those lines?

Seems a lot less harsh than backcombing anyway - and backcombing tends to fall out half way through the day, and looks terrible if you get caught in the rain or wind.

Babyliss Big Hair is amazing! Otherwise I'd suggest mousse at the roots [I use one from Tresemme] and blowdry hair upside down. Buy some large rollers, spray tonnes of hairspray and leave in your hair as you do make-up, get dressed etc. Elnett is fab, holds well without being too heavy and brushes out easily, large cans can be bought in Peter Marks cheaper than most places. Also have a look on youtube for some backcombing tutorials but I wouldnt reccommend doing it too often as it can be damaging

You just rub a little on your hands and rub your roots with it. Iv found it very good. Handy bag size as well to take on a night out

I feel your pain, OP. I have long(ish), fine hair and nothing I do gives it more volume. The only way I can make my hair look bigger is by curling it but if I wanna wear it straight, it sort of just hangs there. >_< Am very interested in this thread!

oh another thing i swear by... ROLLERS! lol i know i look like a granny with them in but they are great.. put them in dry hair blast with hairspray and then blast with a hairdryer leave them to cool down and voila lovely full hair!

Same problem here OP, it's such a pain! :(

I love the Charles Worthington volume mousse though, and usually a good upspide-down blowdrying helps! If you're going to backcomb, dry shampoo (used sparingly) is a great trick! The John Frieda volumizing hairspray is also pretty good.

    Osis Dust it!

I swear by it. Its a mattifying powder, just sprinkle a litte into your roots and voila! Really works well to put volume in the roots, separate out your layers and give a kinda messy look. It also really helps to keep my fringe in place. Only thing is it feels awful, you'll want to wash your hair the second you put it in, but it looks amazing. I have fine, straight, layered hair just below shoulder length. I got it in one of those specialist hair shops, think it was about €16 but it last ages cause I don't use much of it and only use it for nights out or a little bit to keep my fringe in place some days. Love it though!

Also! Used to have my hair longer and layered and I lived for velcro rollers! Would put them in after I washed my hair, hang around the house looking like a granny for 2 hours, but then my hair was massive! You can get them cheap enough in chemists. Some people use them only on the top layer of their hair, I used them on my whole head and my hair would have amazing body after.

I sometimes use a volumizing mousse from Boots and it works nicely, but my favorite is a John Frieda volumizing spray (it's the one in the blue bottle I think). There is a JF mousse as well but I haven't tried it.
