Why can't you insert contact details into text messages?

I'm finding myself more and more frustrated with little features missing like this. On my old Nokia phone; it was very intuitive. It would automatically grab a list of numbers on screen etc. to use as contact details, and you could easily insert contact details into text messages.

All of this real phoney kind of functionality is lost on Android. It looks like the apps that replace this feature are not free either, and I don't think it's fair to rely on third parties for such a basic feature.

What apps are the best for this?

You can do this with the following steps:

    1) Go into your contacts
    2) Select the contact whose details you want to send
    3) Long press on the specific number you want to send
    4) Select Share
    5) Select Messaging

You should now have a text message with the number in the text.

    Hope that helps...

On my desire anyway it's pretty easy to send a v-card, if that's not possible I usually just go into the contact, click to edit the number, then hold my finger on the number until I am given an option to copy, then I just paste it into a message. There are probably better ways of doing it though.

It's standard and easy, when in the text message hit the menu button, select add text and then select contacts. You can then either add all contact details or just the name or number.

There is no "add text". I'm using Froyo. I have Cabbage installed too and that doesn't have the option either.

There's also no Share. What version of Android are you using?

Should I get a new Contacts app? What one should I use? Thanks.

I'm using froyo too, and with cabbage I think that's an app limitation. What phone and options do you have ?

With the second option above do you get a send contact information option then ? Both work for me.

ZTE Blade. I'm using the latest FLB build.

Also how do I make alert noises only happen for text messages, not emails?

On Gingerbread there's an "Attach" option on the Menu, and one of the items it gives you is contact information. This is available both on stock Messaging and Handcent at least.

I'm on Gingerbread (Cyanogenmod 7 on the HTC Desire) and using the stock contacts app.

niallb's post above shows a much easier way to do it on Gingerbread though.
