    long story short, no

You can pay for the cost of the rental on the debit card, or by cash if you wish.

However, the credit card is pre-authorised for the amount of the excess on the insurance policy (read your small print) in case of any damage. It's not possible to run a preauthorisation on a debit card.

And that's why you need the credit card. Only way around it is either to leave a substantial cash deposit (amount varies by rental agency), or pay extra to bring the insurance excess down to €0

I have a Mastercard debit card and had no problems so far renting cars with it.
There was never any problems doing preauthorisation on it.

To be honest I think it more depends on the card.
As mine, while being debit card, is everywhere treated like credit card.

Hi, I am going to Italy (Pisa to be exact on 31.12.11 for a week) and need to hire a car. I have a mastercard debit card and can book the car etc via the ryanair website which goes into Hertz, no problem.
However I dont want to run into any problems when I arrive at t he car hire desk and need to take the optionals only available then, such as the increased car insurance cover, extra driver etc. I know normally at that point, they block a portion off your credit card to cover this, but as I dont have a credit card, only a mastercard debit card, will this be possible ?????? I spoke to a guy who is a car hire broker (had sent one of the many unsolicited emails to me) and he said its not possible to use a debit card to get car hire anywhere including italy, whereas I spoke to a Hertz man in Dublin on the phone and he said, if I can book the car through the ryanair site there should be no problem on arrival using the debit card. He said the only place where there is a problem is in Spain.

As its really important to me to be able to book a car hire and use it when I get there, I would really appreciate the benefit of anyones advice - maybe with regard to experiences in Pisa or Italy, the car rental companies etc etc. Thanks in advance to all with any help.
