Owning a Car is Pretty Frigging Awesome

As some of you guys might remember last month I was annoying you with requests on all sorts of things as we wanted to buy our first ever car. We've always lived in and around and worked in and around the city centre so walking/cycling/public transport was always an option.

A few months ago we bought our first house which is out in the sticks. While taking the train is fine for me it simply wasn't an option for her to get to work, it was more often than not taking her up to 5 hours to travel to and from work.

She has a full driving licence from Poland so we decided it was high time to get ourselves a little run around. With the advice on here we settled on a Nissan Micra (yes I realize some of you may not consider it a real car!) that fit our requirements. It's 12 years old but it runs very smoothly and it's 'easy to park'.... hehe one of her main requirements.

So we did some 'practice' runs to her workplace and taken it to Tesco and back and it's just fantastic. I no longer have to lug several days of shopping on my back 20 mins to the house while also carrying 9 litres of water! We can load the car up with more shopping so we don't have to go as frequently.

It saves her about 4 hours per day which is just phenomenal. She's going away and coming back a much happier, much more refreshed person. She no longer dreads the commute. Naturally this will have a positive influence on our relationship with more time together, my not having to walk her to and from the train station (a 30 min walk each way). I only need go as far as my front door now!

All in all it's just brilliant. So thank you very much for all the advice that was given. As mentioned this is our first car, so while I've always loved cars and had an interest in them, having one was something that just never happened for various reason, until now when the timing was just right. I'm sure I will be calling on advice in the near future as I get up to speed on all that owning a car entails. There are a few things I'd like to do such as perhaps throwing on some alloys/new tires, replacing the running lights with something better/replacing the glovebox etc.

For now as previously posted the only pic I have. I'll throw up some better ones in the coming days.

Haha no I won't. I still have to get myself to the station in the mornings while someone is still sleeping, plus I cycle the 35km in every now and again (aiming for once a week).

Nothing like having your own wheels! Make sure you go and explore the wonderful countyside Ireland has to offer.....its all within your reach now!

It can be so easy to forget about how lucky we can be to be able to afford cars and generally just have them.

Its a fantastic sense of freedom and independence and just a sense of relaxation knowing you can have the car when you need it for the exact reasons you mentioned like Tesco trips.

I had a moment like that moving out of Belfast over the weekend. I managed to get everything I own into the car and head home in my own time taking in the delights of motorway Burger King!

Good stuff! May you have years of service from the Micra!

That's one of the things we're absolutely most looking forward to. Without a car you're fairly limited where you can go and enjoy. For example, Dongeal when we were looking a few years back had absolutely no bus tours whatsoever.

Heh it has been building up for quite some time Kevin. First and foremost was to get the house. After that we saved to get the essentials and then the car. For about two months she made me really proud by just soldiering on and walking/cycling to the station. Taking a train to town and then a bus to her workplace and then the reverse coming home. She just got on with it and grumbled very little. So having the car now just makes her life unbelievably better and she really deserves it.

Even my car has saved me a serious amount of time - at least 8 hours a week, probably more like 12 hours.

You just wanted to tell us you have a Polish missus!

Ah no seriously, fair play, I remember the excitement of my first car (being from the sticks) nothing beats it really.

Polish licence is not 100% proof of Polish missus ;)

I drove a 99 micra until last week for the 1st year of me driving, she never let me down, even in that horrible snow/ice period we had. Started every time. Will be sad to see her go.

this is the first time i will say this:

    "thank you micra, thank you!"

I wouldnt call it too remote if you can jump on the train. Im 45 miles from nearest train and about 6 miles from a shop. But yes, you are right, owning a car is awesome.

Haha the Micra has never exactly been famed for its space in the rear. It's hardly ideal for some shenanigans..................... but I'll report back on it's spaciousness/lack of should something happen!

Nice car OP and congrats on getting it.

Just make sure it NEVER gets an L plate and all will be well in the world.

This country does not need another L plated Micra !

    *my pet hate*

Not L plate drivers, just L plated Micra's

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
