My ’00 TD5 broke down a few nights ago with smoke pouring out of it. The large coolant pipe burst just before the entrance into the engine with oily coolant all over the engine compartment. A local garage owner stopped to help and got me moving again to his garage a few miles away. There is lots of thick oil residue on the water filler thing and he said it’s probably the gasket gone allowing oil to escape into the coolant area. He’s going to give me a quote to fix the whole thing with issues like head needs plaining, timing belt might need replacing etc.
Any ideas what kind of money I’m looking at? 00 TD5 with 151K miles on the clock.

    Thanks

That's a real bummer, does sound like head gasket. Not sure you can skim Td5 heads, buying a new one is better and then only from Turner Engineering for £1110 plus £150 for the fitting kit. http://turner-engineering.co.uk/html/specialoffers.html

If the head is OK it's a relatively cheap and simple exercise to change the gasket, £150 for the above kit plus labour. A top hose is around £40 and a new thermostat should be fitted. The Td5 doesn't have a timing belt, it's chain driven.

Anything the garage needs to know will be on that RAVE CD I gave you a few months ago.

I payed 1000 euros at the main dealers a few years ago. Mine is a defender but with the same TD5 engine. They skimmed the head (sent it away to get skimmed) aswell and guaranteed the job. Its been fine sense though thank God.
I would not expect to pay any more than what it cost me and possibly a fair bit cheaper at an indy garage. Best of luck with it.

I was under the impression that LR stuff was dirt cheap?
A grand for a head doesn't seem cheap to me. Is that built up or just bare head?

The guy just got back to me. Says the oil cooler is also gone. Somewhere between 1500 and 2000 to do the job.

Sean, who else in Tipp can look at this and give me a quote?

    Thanks

That's a fully buit up head minus injectors. Turners are a bit dearer but there's are the only ones worth using, even dealers get them there.

The oil cooler is water cooled and on the side of the block, replacement one is £175 plus gaskets. Everything to get at it has to come off for the head anyway.

I don't know of anyone else in Tipp that would do Land Rover, Paddy Buckley in Mallow would be the nearest.

Thats a lot of yo yos  . I was thinking of having a go myself at the time but could not find out for sure what gasket (1 hole ,2 hole or 3 hole) I needed without first taking the old one off and then having to wait for the new one to be delivered, it would have been parked outside while I waited so I parted with the cash instead.
Shop around or get busy with some spanners I think 2000 euros is worth saving anyway you can.

Forgot about Cahir 4x4, may be worth trying them.

Just thinking out loud here, would it be that the head gasket is ok and just the oil cooler ruptured.
On my older jags the gearbox oil and coolant met in the radiator. A thin metal wall would corode, and high pressure coolant would flood the gearbox.
    Just sounds a bit familiar.

    Yeah, I hear ya.

I've decided to step out of Landrover ownership for a while. I sold the LR to the garage owner.

Let me just say for the record, I really liked this jeep. It was rock solid but not suited to going up and down to Cork from Thurles every day (80 miles ew) at the speeds I was going at. If I had the money, I would loved to have kept it as a local run around. Really like the look of the defender, the short one and one day will get one of those. Saw an '09 in Cork last night and even my wife likes it :).

Sean, thanks for all the advice and help. See you at some local events coming up, hopefully.
