Whistleblowers

The issue of Whistleblowers is in the news at the moment, due in large part to the apparent role of whistleblowers in bringing the problems at Rostrevor Nursing home to the notice of the authorities and public.

That is why I am so disturbed to see that Ruari Quinn yesterday flagged the possibility of rowing back on the new government's committment to introduce a new overall protection for whistleblowers, and reverting to FFs position, which was to do the thing piecemeal.

Quinn appears to be caving in to the same forces which deterred the last government from moving to protect whistleblowers.

In my opinion, the "sector by sector approach" mentioned by Quinn would be the same spineless cop-out which FF went for. It would be a betrayal of the reforming promises made by this government and by the Labour Party.

That's exactly what the Transparency International guy said on RTE this morning.

Does the government even run the state given whoever we elect, we get the same stories?

It is getting a bit ridiculous at this stage.

Any idea what these might be? Unions? HSE? Baffled as to why legislation could not be passed tomorrow.

    Any ideas why not?

I'd have the same question - who might be lobbying against whistleblower legislation and how can we expose them?

I don't think there is anyone lobbying against it. I think the poster meant the shoe on the other foot.

The government doesn't want whistler blower legislation and that is something all parties that wish to be in government have in common once they get to be in government.

I am encouraged by reports that one of the referendums to be held in Autumn will be on whistleblowers. This may be the best way forward, but it remains to be seen what the wording will be.

I don't understand the need for a sector by sector approach at all, there cannot be that much difference over sectors that they all need to be treated individually.

The whole Government and Civil service structure IMO, virtually every organization with power and including private business. Its only conscientious individuals who want protection for whistleblowers. Governments have more to fear than anyone so no wonder it is dragging its feet
