You would be far better off buying a Saorview DVR set top box, so it can record to a hard drive rather than a DVD as DVD recorders are outdated at this stage. Also the Saorview box would be far cheaper, around €100 ish. Just an example here. Just remember you will need a hard drive too tho.

Many Set Top Boxes can perform as a PVR. Such a STB with a HDD will record independantly of the TV. You route the aerial through the STB and onto the TV. Connect the STB to the TV via HDMI. Select the HDMI input to the TV and set the PVR to record the programme. Revert back to the TV to watch whatever. When you want to view the recorded programme, go to HDMI input and select the recorded progamme and watch it. If the HDD is 500 Gigabyte, you have lots of room to record things.

    Simples.

And cheap. Could all be done for about €100, if you get the right STB.

If you intend using the tuner built into the TV
    1. you will only be able to record what you are watching
    2. the TV must be on to record
    3. it would not record in HD
Sam's suggestion above is a far better option for relatively little outlay.
