My wee fellow's team got to the school county final of 1-3 teacher schools, played 4 games to get there, was always 7 a side in them 4 games and that's what it even was many a moon ago when I played for the same school.
In the final though, we were informed it was 5 a side:eek: playing across the width of McCumhaill park in Ballybofey and it was only 2 touch as well, which I thought was a complete joke under the circumstances.

First time I have ever even heard of 5 a side in Gaelic football so just wondering is this maybe a common event around the rest of the country.

Thats a complete joke, if it was 7 a side up till now it should have to be 7 a side in the final. Completly unfair to say to 2 kids who started in previous games that they cant start in the final. Nothing wrong with having a 2 touch rule as it means everyone has to touch the ball regularly and the best players have to look to pass to team mates in order to get scores but in 5 a side at primary school level across a big pitch its tough going
At least your kid will get to play on his final, when i was in 6th class and we got to our schools final, the final was scheduled for a day our school was going to be closed for some reason and our principal refused to look for the date to be changed even though some parents offered to take us to the game and he gave a walkover:mad:.

Have no problem with the 2 touch rule but as you say it was a big pitch and with 5 playing, it was hard for the players to keep running up to support the one forward.

5 a side may happen with small schools.A two teacher school may have 30 pupils, half of those in 3rd to 6th =15, half of the 15 are boys, so 7 or 8 children to play-presuming they ALL play.

Why can't you just be pleased that the children are in the final and that a teacher is willing to take it on.

:rolleyes:Of course we were pleased they were in the final but when 7 lads go out to the pitch and then are told 2 of you cannot start because it is 5 a side, seemed rather unfair at the time.

The reply above said they have 7 to play - yeah, fair play to the teacher for taking it on, but still, if the rules are 7 a side the whole way along, then they should be retained for the final. The school had 2 subs on the sidelines, so a max of seven players - and to be fair, I think they all should have been playing. Nothing worse for a child to be standing on the sideline when clearly the rules all along state they shouldn't be.

Any idea when they were told that it would be 5 a side?? If 7 a side is the rule, it should be stuck to and the schools informed of such. Leave the players play, they were obviously good enough to get to the final so are not bad. I feel sorry for the two kids who didn't get to start because of a rule change, it could have a huge impact on the kids, being told that they couldn't start because it was 5 a side.

5 a side across the pitch is too little anyway, if there was more, then the two touch rule would be okay, but not with only five players on. Sounds like a huge mistake on the behalf of the organisers imo

Were told it was 5 a side when they were warming up before the game started, bad organisation alright

That is a complete joke and extremely bad for the kids - then I presume the teacher had to tell two lads they couldn't play?

And after training for the last few weeks to play 7 a side as well, playing with different rules is wrong on so many levels

lot of short sighted, narrow minded and inflexible people out there in the world

and many of them seem to be involved in the GAA!

rules, line ups, pitch sizes should never be changed once a competition has been started
you should never leave subs on the sideline where possible.
