According to http://www.drcc.ie/about/savi.pdf ( see page 88 / 89 ),"Combining religious ministers and religious teachers they constituted the largest single category of authority figures as abusers of boys; 5.8 per cent of all boys sexually abused were abused by clergy or religious".

As far as I can find out , under a deal hammered out with the Fianna Fail government some years ago, 90% of the compensation paid to victims has been paid by the taxpayer - you and me. Should the RCC ( which according to various initial google searches has an average of about 90 billion euro of assets worldwide ) not have to pay a higher percentage of the compensation to victims ?

Incidentally, across the Atlantic, according to http://www.newsweek.com/2010/04/07/mean-men.html , a Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll found that 64 percent of those queried thought Catholic priests "frequently'' abused children. I wonder in other countries does the taxpayer pay most of the compensation for abuses committed by clergy / religous ?

Is there any reason why we need yet another thread on the sex abuse scandals? As we have had a ton of these in the last few weeks - indeed, I seem to recall the same stats quoted last week - I'm locking this for now. Gigino can PM me if there is a new take on this.
