HB Studios and 505 GAMES ANNOUNCE RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 – THE OFFICIAL GAME OF RUGBY WORLD CUP
*The definitive Rugby game comes to consoles this summer with full online play
    Unrivalled detail and player experience

Rugby World Cup Limited has today announced the appointment of HB Studios and 505 GAMES as Official Licensee to exclusively produce RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011, the official game of this year’s Tournament in New Zealand.

Due to be launched on August 26th for the Xbox360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 platforms, the innovative and unique game will reflect in detail the incredible action and passion of Rugby’s showcase sporting event with the most accurate Rugby experience ever created.

Developed by leading Rugby developer HB Studios, RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 represents the studio’s first Rugby game on this generation of consoles and takes full advantage of the available hardware to create a game that reflects the prestige of the world’s third-largest sports event.

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 will challenge players to pick from the 20 Rugby World Cup 2011 participating countries, and attempt to lead their team through the pool phase progress to the Final and the opportunity to lift the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup.

National rivalries, venues and player personalities are perfectly captured as participants will fight for the pride of their nation in either solo play or with up to three friends in local multiplayer matches. For the first time, HB Studios will give players the chance to fight for the glory of their country online by challenging other players to one-on-one matches on Xbox LIVE® and PlayStation®Network.

“We are delighted that there will be an official game of Rugby World Cup 2011, delivering the ability to boost the tournament experience for Rugby fans whilst growing the appeal and profile of our sport across all markets. This game will capture the emotion, passion, drama and excitement of what is the biggest sporting event of the year,” said IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

    Now for Rugby challenge
SYDNEY, Australia – November 15, 2010 – Home Entertainment Suppliers Pty Ltd (HES) announced today the development of Rugby Challenge for console and PC, by Wellington based games developer Sidhe. The rugby union based title seeks to capture the attention of a growing number of rugby fans around the world.

“HES has a strong history of publishing sports based videogames” said David Robles, Business Development Manager for HES. “The sport of rugby is a great fit for us to build on that foundation, and we are excited by the long term potential for it as part of our growing portfolio”.

Rugby Challenge will include the All Blacks, ITM Cup, and Investec Super Rugby amongst other licensed teams and competitions, and will feature multiplayer online play, a multi-year franchise mode, extensive customisation options, and dynamic real-time commentary.

New Zealand Rugby Union Commercial Manager Paul Dalton said they were delighted to be able to put their support behind Rugby Challenge. “We are very excited to be able to now offer fans an authentic gaming experience that includes our key competitions,” he said.

“After achieving success with other sports videogames, we are extremely proud to be taking on the national sport of New Zealand” said Mario Wynands, Managing Director of Sidhe, “This is an exciting time for rugby both within New Zealand and internationally, and it is fantastic to be a part of that”.

Rugby Challenge will release for console and PC in Q3 2011. More information and ongoing updates about the game can be found at the official website http://www.rugbychallengegame.com

Pictures of it ( btw they look amazing )
I was too lazy to put pictures here separately so here is a video

Video doesnt seem to embed on my screen so here is a link.

To see the pictures by them selves go to http://rugbychallengegame.com/.

Sidhes ( rugby challenge) game picture look better by far btw they were taken from in game. HB studios game is not the greatest of quality to be honest but is ment to make up for it for gameplay ( realism ).

Would be great if this was any good. I quite like EA's older takes on Rugby, can't beat Jonah Lomu's Rugby though.

I've heard that one of them will feature European teams as well, so I'll probably pick up that game..Hoping it's the one by HB Studios though.

HB's gameplay realism goes as far as the use of a rugby ball.

Awesome! We've needed this for a while! If either of the games is as good as FIFA it would be epic....although previous rugby games were a big let down! Any details on the games?

    C&P from Rugby :)

Got a preview of Rugby World Cup 2011 at the weekend - no hands on but did see it in action...Any questions that I can attempt to answer? Got to speak to developers for a little while too.

    Preview at Clickonline.com
All eyes will be on New Zealand in September with the start of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. However, to tide fans over until that point, the Rugby World Cup 2011 game is set to bring the action to living rooms everyone. Come August, players will be given the opportunity to put speculation to rest and attempt to win the Webb Ellis cup.

When early screenshots were released, fans were taken aback. The shots looked like they belonged in a previous generation console release circa 1998. The graphics have improved significantly over these early glimpses. While still not completely true to life, the game is looking good. Thankfully, HB Studios has indicated that graphics are not the be-all-and-end-all. Instead, effort and focus is being placed on the gameplay.

It would be easy to create the perfect Rugby game if it was as start-stop as American Football, or based on positional movement like Soccer. Depending on what way you look at it, it is a blessing and a curse that Rugby is not played like this. Rugby games have struggled to capture the essence of the sport. Even previous greats were simply a case of shipping it along the line until there was a gap, or an unstoppable player got the ball and steamrolled the opposition. HB Studios is looking to change this and bring the modern game to digital form. When there is a ruck, players will have multiple options. Forwards can pick and drive, the scrum half can have a cut or box kick, or individual plays can be set up with loops and switches. Of course, at the same time, players can go for the traditional flinging it out to the wing approach.

The key to winning the World Cup could be fluid offloading and quick releases. This has been implemented into Rugby World Cup 2011. Like set plays, these relies on pressing a face button in conjunction with the action. Offloading and quick pickups of a loose ball are simply a press of a button. Naturally, there are risks attached. A loose offload could be the difference between a win and a loss. However, if timed correctly it could be the key to unlocking a defence.

Rugby World Cup 2011 is not a simulation game, nor is it a full arcade title. It is a mix of the two that captures the essentials. HB Studios is more interested in creating moments of elation and fun, rather than moments of frustration. Players can undertake mazy runs and possibly wrong foot defenders, players can put in a cheeky chip and chase, and others will put in thumping tackles.

As would be expected, Rugby World Cup 2011 allows players to pick their favourite qualified nation and take them on a rollercoaster journey to life the Webb Ellis trophy. In addition, players can undertake an international test against the computer or friends. If players wish to practice their kicking, or challenge friends to a shootout, the option is available from the main menu. Friends and random strangers can also be challenged online. Finally, Rugby World Cup 2011 allows players to choose a nation and undertake a warm up tour of the opposite hemisphere. If all that wasn’t enough, there is the option to randomise pools and play out an alternative universe version of the World Cup.

The elephant in the room is, of course, another Rugby title that will be released around the same time. Rugby World Cup 2011 has many licenses, but has missed out on the All Blacks and Quantas Australia. General Manager of HB Studios, Alastair Jarvis, said time and time again that they would respect the licenses. So, it is unlikely that New Zealand will feature the likes of Ben Harter or Richard MacKawl.

To counter-act this somewhat, while still remaining respectful of the licenses, a player editor has been included. Appearances cannot be modified but names and attributes can be changed at will. This may prove useful coming closer to the World Cup itself, as there are often some wildcard selections; who would have predicted France’s final squad? Multiple roster files can be created. So if players want to make a superteam in one version that has attributes of 99 all round, another that is completely accurate and another that includes players who missed the cut, they can! PlayStation 3 owners will also be able to share these roster files, so someone else can do all the donkeywork!

Rugby fans have had to wait four years since the last release, but Rugby World Cup 2011 is shaping up to be a fun and exciting title. While it is accessible, there is some depth to it and manages to create a blend of simulation and arcade fun that should entertain across the board. Rugby World Cup 2011 is a title to track until it engages on 26 August.

Are you talking about the demo for RWC11? If so, I'm just disappointed in the demo, full stop. And as for EA not making it, they didn't actually "make" Rugby 08 (only published it after HB Studios made it), and Rugby 06 was developed in conjunction with HB Studios as well. Given all that, this is the successor in all but name to EA Rugby, and a poor one at that, given the time since those games. I don't think EA being involved would have made it much better, mind, as they seem happy to just publish games developed by others if it's a sport that's less popular in North America. I'll be waiting for a look at Rugby Challenge, and if I buy the RWC one at all it'll be when it hits the bargain bins.

    RWC2011 blows..
The demo looks good - but playability sucks.. If all you want to do is kick, pass and look at nice graphics its probably the game for you.. Seems to be a matter of hitting X a lot, and L1/R1. Doesn't seem to be any skill

I hope Rugby Challenge pulls it off as the last JLR was great - it's been 14yrs since we had a decent rugby game.
