My GF has a 1.5 5 door hatch back 2001 Almera and the engine light just came on. The engine doesnt sound any different, she's not losing power etc.

Anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? Timing chain need to be replaced?

Also is there anyway of checking for error codes?

ANY help would be great thanks!

Only way to tell is to hook it up to a diagnostic computer. I might just be something simple, coil etc.

If the car is still running as normal, I'd guess a lamda fault has been recorded.

faulty oxy sensor. Were the oxy sensors changed when Nissan sent out the notification in 2001?

Could be any number of things but better off to get it checked out. Note it won't pass an NCT with any warning light on.

Yes It will pass the NCT with an EML if theres no other faults present

As above, only safety related warning lights will fail the NCT, i.e ABS, Airbags etc..

Thanks everyone for the advice. Seems to have gone off again. Will get it in to a garage next chance I get.
