Apologies in advance if this topic has been discussed already, but I'm only only a part-time follower of the forum.

I was thinking about changing car in the coming months and have just started looking around but I find it difficult to see any 08+ decent petrol cars available. Everything being sold is diesel. Obviously this is to do with the cheaper tax but I dont understand how all (or at least 90%) of the bigger cars being sold are diesels? I probably only do about 12k mls a year so on that basis I'd find it hard to buy diesel, plus my general daily driving is 4 shortish trips of about 10 miles each. Again that doesn't lend itself to diesel engines.

I'm looking for something decently sized, a bit of poke and has plenty of gadgets / comfort inside. The Superb ticked these boxes but there's next to none in a petrol model. This seems to be the case across most models too, Passats etc.

Is there anything that can be done? Is there just no market for 2nd hand petrol cars that are post 08 anymore?

Cheers, but I'm probably looking for something a bit more boring (:o). With 2 young(ish) kids, I dont get the opportunity to drive it like it can much!

I'm not even looking for recommendations of specific cars for sale, maybe just some anecdotal evidence that there are indeed petrol models available or they are being sold still. I heard for example that Ford dont actually sell a petrol version of the Mondeo in this country anymore. Is that true?

    Octavias are boring! :pac:

You've got the size of the Octavia, comfortable interior and a good bit of poke out of the 2.0l petrol unit, around 195bhp as far as I know? The kids will get lost in the boot too :pac:

There will be early 08 petrols for sale, and you should be able to grab a bargain - well, in comparison to the Diesel versions. Plus, you should be able to drive a hard bargain with the dealer as they won't want to have Petrol's sitting around for too long.

The Passat 1.4Tsi isn't that bad to drive, if you aren't looking for something fast it should be OK. Will be cheap enough to tax as well.

Might break down all the time though........

If you want a lot more car for the money, http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Mondeo/TITANIUM/201120202422853/advert?channel=CARS

But, if you want something that will never, ever let you down, looks pretty good, and can be driven on (if you get the chance) http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Accord/2.0-TYPE/201122202690224/advert?channel=CARS

Spot on Berty, also OP the guards use these and they rarely give trouble. They are a lovely car to drive and cheap to look after. Just make sure its serviced and well looked after you should get away with it.

My father has an identical one to the car ROR linked and I would buy one in the morning. Titanium X has a great spec too.

Titanium X dash and console is sexy, better than most of the German ones and I love German cars!

My 1.6 Saloon is slower than I'd like - a 1.4 Passat must be nearly undriveable.

It's a 1.4 turbo. It's actually a grand car to drive. I liked it anyway. Only concern would be a small capacity turbo engine in a big car might cause problems.

The B6 Passat is actually a lighter car than the B5 and that engine has similar power to the old 1.8 and 2 litre.

Should be able to pick up a 2008 new shape Mazda 6 petrol cheap enough these days. Very little goes wrong with them and they are even slightly cheaper to tax on the new system, for example:

1.6Fsi was 115bhp - had one for a week and didn't think it was that bad. Had a dodgy coil too.

1.4Tsi is 122bhp with more torque than the n/a 1.6. Only one of those I've ever driven was a DSG hire car, and that was nippy enough.

Still go for the Mondeo or Accord though.
