    Hi
As we all know the digital changeover is coming shortly, sooner than some hope and not soon enough for others..i have a few questions...

Where can i buy an mpeg4 (that also carries mpeg2) box at a reasonable price with recording facilities?

A lot of people dont seem to realise that they have no recording on the digital channels on an ordinary built in freeview tv...well they have 1,record only the channel your watching.

People believe 'ahh new tv got im ready for the changeover' thats until when analogue is switched off they will find out they're goose'd,they cant record!

Why havent the Governments North and South properly explained this to people?

Especially North...theyve been through it in England!

Think the Irish Government should step up and stop selling ordinary Saorview Boxes sell Recordable ones only, an Ordinary Box for 50EURO should come with a warning recording minimal at least!!!

A lot of STB do record. The one I sell has a very good PVR function that just requires a USB HDD. The total cost for the box (€50) together with a suitable 125 Gb HDD (€50) gives a full solution. It can record a different channel from the one being watched (if it on the same mux) so even if the TV is not Saorview capable, it will do as you require.

Historically, TVs have never been able to record, so I think you are being unfair.

    Hope that helps.

it's not up to the governments to decide if something should be recordable or not, as long as the signal is received. there's plenty of threads already on straight forward STBs and recordable STBs (PVRs).

Thanks for your reply few things though:

Im an aged woman (im not though hear me out)
ive just bought an new aerial for the 'digital changeover'
ive bought a new tv for the changeover
im ready for digital 'according to the government'

    i go to record emmerdale........
without one of your boxes i cant

so i buy a box (more money)

and record and watch fair city at the same time
go to view emmerdale and its not there

    different mux

Try explaining that to me as an old woman

My problem isnt with you or people trying to earn a few pound/euro

Its the problem that the government are not being clear

Missing my point,do you believe that the government have been clear on what constitutes as ready?

new aerial and television maybe required

    thats all you see

im just trying to say that it should be made clearer to people before they go out and buy new tv's etc that they cannot record like they used to!

Well i don't really see how its the governments responsibility to tell everyone how to record is it??

Supply of a digital service it what they are doing.. What you do with that service is up to you.. Some will want to record.. some will not.. Some like myself with a compatible TV wont even bother to switch it on as its mostly rubbish!!!!

They have given huge notice when the changeover will happen.. Supplied you with all the information needed(Codecs and such).. Testing and recommending boxs and retailers...

they have been clear on what constitutes as ready, which is why they have saorview certification. if you're so worried about it, only buy something with that label.
no one has officially said that a new aerial is needed. that's come from scheisters looking to make a quick buck.

Analogue switchoff doesn't happen until Oct 2012, until then your analogue VCR or DVD recorder will continue to work as before.

The analogue switchoff information campaign starts 12 months before that date, Oct 2011. Following an agreement, signed by the two governments in Feb 2010, the switchover information campaign will included information regarding overspill and reception equipment.

There will always be a market for both basic zapper and PVR receivers. The government doesn't sell reception equipment that will be for the manufacturers and retailers, probably once they know there is sufficient market demand.

I think once the focus is on ASO/DSO on this island and an interoperable spec is agreed, it might be a better time to look at buying a PVR - if you can receive freeview from an NI or Welsh transmitter .

For the next 17 months or so your existing VCR or DVD recorder will work as before.

A change of aerial or TV will not affect that.

I have no plans atm to upgrade my analogue Nordmende HDD/DVD recorder and it works no problem with my current DTT setup.

Paying out for what? The terrestrial transmission network has been here for 50 years.
