Looking to buy a new phone, and am hoping to upgrade to smart phone, however i am only eligible for silver upgrade, and the two in my price range are really the Nokia N97 or HTC Desire.

I am leaning towards HTC, but are there any owners out there that would recommend it?

Yeah Desire is good, but doesn't compare to the latest devices. It only has 100MB internal storage for apps, which can be annoying. You can fix that by doing some serious rooting/modding/partitioning but that might be beyond a normal user.

If those two are your only choices, it's Desire hands down, 100%, all the way. I wouldn't touch the N97 with a ten foot pole. It's just not in the same ballpark with the Desire. :) True, the D needs a bit of tinkering to make the most of it, but once it's set up properly it's still a beast of a phone, and the Internet is rife with beginner friendly tutorials of how to do it. Go for it I'd say, once you go Android you'll never look back. :)

having owned an N97 since launch day (and an N900 after that) and had a Desire HD & been playing with my wife's Desire (ooh eer missus!) that i got at the same time in January, I can confidently say that I would rather cut off my little finger than go back to using an N97 because it is bloody awful.

the N97 is outdated, slow as hell, buggy and lacking in both features and available apps.

by comparison, the n900 was a lot better than the n97 but is still suffering from a lot of the same problems nokia has with everything these days and is still miles behind any half decent android handset.

it's like asking if you should get a cheap small piece of unsanded 2x4 wood or a ninja sword. :D

seriously, it's not even a question, don't go anywhere near the n97 even if your life depends on it. nokia has had the last of my money and i'm already looking forward to the next gen android devices coming out so i can get one of those too! :)

The Desire is a very good phone out of the box, more than adequate for most users. If you root it and put Gingerbraed on it, it's a great phone. Obviously it's been overtaken by the really top end new Android phones but I still don't see a need to upgrade mine any time soon.

Desire it is so, thats what i thought, i was leaning towards it anyway as i think the look of it is far superior.

    Thanks for all the help

I got the n97 when it came out first and never had a more annoying phone in my life. It's a brutal hape of sheite.

Alot of people have had complaints about the N97 and the N97 mini. Piece of crap phone

HTC desire is a pretty slick phone. Even though the Desire S is new on the market many people still go for the desire.....set the benchmark for HTC IMO and a pretty high bench mark at that! :)

    HTC all the way!

i know, i was so utterly disappointed with the n97 when it came. :(

there's a thread knocking around the forums here, i was (afaik) the first one in ireland to have one, i got it sim free from expansys and it turned up by courier the day before the official launch day in the UK and i was so stoked until i actually started using it and realised what a turkey it was.

android all the way now, no going back for me. :)

I remember s60 being the doggies danglies going back as far as the n86, and the 5800 was a great phone at the time but even the worst Android phone is better than the best symbian model, and I think Nokia made a huge mistake going with Windows mobile. Had an xda orbit and a couple of other wm phones when they were the latest thing but android is way out in front.

yep, final nail in the coffin for nokia imho.

they would have been much beter off investing their time & money into bringing maemo up to speed, or even meego, but both were such half ar$ed efforts they never really got off the ground despite having plenty of potential.
