No problem at all. I take mine with me every time I fly. No different to any other electronic device once it's switched off.

Never put anything of value in your checked in luggage. Always bring electronic stuff on the plane with you.

Trust me it will get stolen if its in your checked in bag.

Not only can you take your sat-nav with you, you are even allowed to use it during the flight. Contrary to what the likes of CSI would have you believe, a sat-nav transmits no signals whatsoever. It is purely a receiver.

Ryanair do not have sat-navs on their list of electronics devices banned from use during a flight. Aer Lingus go even further, explicitly listing them as allowed.

If you get a window seat, your sat-nav should be able to get good signal. I always take my sat-nav with me when flying. It is very handy to know how far you are and it is interesting to find out what route the flight is taking. And one time, when our flight turned around mid-flight due to an ill passenger, I saw that on my sat-nav long before the captain had announced it.

It'll come in handy to tell you how far Ryanair have dropped you from civilisation too! :D

    What went through your mind??

Not being a great flyer myself, that would have freaked me out.

I actually just started wondering how long it would be until they announced a) the fact that we had just turned around and b) the reason for it. No need to freak out at all :).

I have taken my Garmin satnav with me on dozens of flights and never had a problem, I never tried using it in-flight as I usually have that on the little screen if flying longhaul and knowing me when I'm on on longhaul I invariably get dumped into the middle aisle!

As others have said never take anything of value in your checked luggage, for a spell there a while back I even used to take the cigarettes I'd have purchased abroad in my carryon too as there was stories of baggage handlers stealing all sorts of stuff from checked bags in Dublin airport. I find Google maps on the iPhone better now so only take the satnav if travelling somewhere outside the UK & Ireland.
