Buying sterling currency

What is the best value way to buy sterling?

For small amounts , I have previously written a euro cheque and lodged it to my sterling account in N.Ireland (Same bank so no charges).

I don't think this attracts the most preferable exchange rate as the currency is not being exchanged in the country of origin.

    Any advice appreciated.

An Post now sell Sterling and the rates are fairly okay. They don't charge commission either so the rate you see is the rate you pay.

If its for large amounts I've seen people use websites for currency exchange.
