plug it in to an external monitor, all laptops have vga or dvi out.Put in a cd ,does it spin up, is there power going in to the laptop,do you see any leds ,is it turning on, powering up.you can usually turn on vga out, by pressing the f5 ,or f7 key, look for 1 or 2screen icons on a f function key.Or try a tv that has vga in, set laptop refresh rate to 60mhz, from grahics settings, advanced.
Try taking out the battery, does it work off the power supply alone.

    Do what Ricman said,
You can also try to shine a torch on the screen to see if you can see the picture.
If you can it means the backlight is gone, this can be caused by the backlight failing or the inverter failing.
Both can be done if you are any way decent with D.I.Y.

could be a RAM issue, take the panel off the bottom, move the RAM position and turn it on then.
