OMSP question on VRT

Sorry for starting another import thread but just wanted to clarify something for myself

Am looking at the possibility of buying an E220 diesel 7seater estate in UK and bringing it across. From the looks of it, I could buy one in the UK for less than e7000.

Went on to Revenue last night to work out the VRT and they didn't have the model in their list. Picked the nearest thing (saloon version) and it was giving a VRT of over e4k as they have the OMSP at over e17k.

As there is no market for these in Ireland (ie that model were never sold over here) what way does it work for VRT? Is there any way you can deal directly with the Revenue on it and get them to work out the VRT. E4k tax on a car that is retailing for E7k is a bit much, can you contest it at all if you can back it up with market prices for similar cars?

    Anyone have any similar experience?

    Cheers

You can contest the amount of VRT, but only AFTER you have paid the VRT on the car you have bought. There is no such thing as doing a deal in advance of buying the car.
Oh, just to note, the OMSP are normally generated by some magic pixies from a land far, far away so don't even attempt to try work out how they are calculated!

Have you played with all the parameters on the revenue site? I bought one last year (E-class estate) it and got quotes for 200K, 240, 320 Petrol and 220, 270, 320 Diesels from the site. The 220 is the most common model - I am sure it was there....

Check out the 200K Petrol btw, VRT is much cheaper and factor in the 300EUR/year saving in car tax (1800 cc vs 2200 cc) when you work out annual bills.

I didnt do much apart from look for the 220 estate, will have another look. Did you contest the VRT at all or was it not as bad as I am expecting??

Would prefer a diesel as the petrols are supposed to be very heavy on the juice. Car tax differential is a bit of a pain though. Will have another look.

Did you bring yours in from UK?

E220 Estate is listed on the VRT Calculator (E 220, E220CDI are also listed, but choose E220 to get the estate option).

The 3rd row of seats in the boot was an optional extra. Think it was around €1,500 so the VRT will be worked out on the 5 seat estate with whatever extras are on the vehicle, including the 3rd row of seats.

Just checked using E220 as opposed to E 220 and the VRT is only around 2k, that makes it a much more attractive prospect

VRT for me was 2.2K. I was amazed how low it was.

For me, I only do 6K miles/year and the annual cost (fuel+tax) was the same between Diesel and Petrol. 200K averages 28mpg; 220CDi is about 40-42. But I was able to buy a 50K mile Petrol vs. 100K+ mile Diesel - car was far nicer. A 50K Diesel was 4K Stg more. The UK doesn't want the 200K whereas the 220CDi is heavily sought after (and tend to be higher mileage)

The only problem is finding a 200K. They're not common. Cargiant in London sometimes have them.

    Good luck with your search.

They did a very simple inspection for me. VRT on additional seats will be very low. Using the OMSP, car has depreciated 80% from new and you pay (Say) 28% VRT:

    1500*0.2*0.28 = 80EUR

Try and get an Avantgarde if you can - usually the owner trades-up to full leather and they also have xenons - nice feature on our dark roads.

    Cheers for that man.

I tend to cover 15-20k miles per year so the fuel consumption and cost would be more of a factor.
Mileage is generally higher on the diesels from what I can see but from what I am told by mates who know their cars, 100k miles on those Merc diesel engines is not a big deal.
My own Mondeo passed her NCT yesterday so is probably as good a time as any to sell her.
7 seat versions of the E220 cdi are not that plentiful in UK but there are a few around the £6k-£8k mark. I imagine if you are bringing to Ireland you can get a decent discount as the warranty won't really apply.
Only trouble is buying from here, was in UK only last weekend but didnt get the chance to go see any of those I picked out. Might have to wait til end of summer to go again.

How did you get her over to here? Did you have to go see many before you found one?

Problem is finding one and moving fast. Anything that looked "cheap" to me went from Autotrader in about 3 days. And when you phone up you're not "down the road" the UK seller (understandably) loses interest. My experience - you are unlikely to get a bargain as you won't be able to move fast enough to secure it. You'll get a good price, but you can get very frustrated if you get annoyed over 300-500 differences.

For peace of mind, you need to AA/RAC before you buy. I gave a deposit on the phone (£500 - it was a dealer so the risk wasn't too high, arranged AA for next day and picked up the car 5 days later).

The only exception is to look in NI. They do come up and obviously it's much easier to get there quickly and many independents have experience of selling here.

Be patient. There is always another car.

Cheers for the advice, am in no rush to buy.
Will keep an eye on NI but haven't seen many up there yet.
How much did the AA/RAC check cost you?
If I can get a nice model, am not going to get too fussy over price, will be looking to hold on to her for a while so it will balance out hopefully in the long run.

Slightly off topic but they're (7 seater e class) popping up on donedeal regularly for a lot less. One went for 800 iirc some weeks ago.
