Would the motorway untill a turn off to Abbeyleix be the best route here?
Thats if there is an Abbeyleix exit?

Aim for Thurles direction, it's only a 40 min drive from Kilkenny.
But Thurles is far closer to Limerick than Abbeyleix is.

You could take Newport Road to Thurles (37 miles from Castletroy Roadabout to Thurles Square) and then drive on to Urlingford-Kilkenny route which is 25 miles.
    62 mile journey in total.
You could also get to Thurles via Nenagh which is slightly longer but the roads are better.

To go to Abbeyleix and then to Kilkenny from Limerick is far longer (it's about 85 miles).

I've done N24 to tipp town, N74 across to Cashel, then M8 to Urlingford, it's not far from Urlingford

That road is abysmal though. Tried it once and felt like it would never end! As the crow flies it definitely is shortest but in a car..no thanks!
Quickest and easiest ways now are Urlingford-M8-Cashel-TippTown-N24-Limerick. The N24 is a very busy road though and needs an upgrade badly. I would try KK-N77-Duurow-R road across via Ballacolla-Borris In Ossary (partly poor road/party decent enough) and get onto M7 just south of Borris. No need to go to Abbeyleix at all. Haven't tried it but will next time as I'd say you'd be in LK in no time once you hit the M7. Kilkenny needs to be better signed from that side imo.

Yeah, that's the quickest way, Durrow, Borris in Ossory and then the M7.

I've tried all the ways in 5 years travelling up and down and that one is by far the quickest, Kilkenny to the M7 is about 45 minutes and then another 45ish to Limerick so you can do it in 1.5 hours.

You actually cross over the M7 outside Borris in Ossory where there should be an onramp but there isn't. If that was there I would say you could do it in 1hr 20mins.
