Two Questions

    Two Questions boffins:

If I'm buying a vehicle from the UK (Commercial) do I need to get the V5 before I part with cash for importing or whats the story.
There is a guy selling one locally on UK plates and I want to know what I need to be asking for....

Also, I've seen a few vans going for sale with no log book. If one were to buy one such wagon, is it possible to get it registered in you're name or is it more likely that its been stolen or some such.......

    Thanks folks.

    1. Always get the V5 when buying a UK reg car/van. The owner can tear off the "for permanent export" part if they want. You then use the V5 for VRT'ing it. Dont let them "post if off", if you dont take it when you hand over the cash, you probably wont ever get it.

    2. IMHO, Never buy anything without a log book, asking for more trouble than its worth. People will say that's its possible to get a new one etc etc, but i know a dealer with cars sitting rotting away because he never got the log book.

    Ta.

Just so I'm clear in my own head, If I never get a V5, then I can't VRT or do anything with the wagon I buy?

I'm sure someone will say you can get it sorted, but it will probably take ages and a whole lot of running around. Best advice is just get the V5, if they dont have the V5, just walk away.

You haven't bought something already and didn't get the V5, have you?

No. I'm in need of a berlingo / caddy / partner and can only spend max 1K. Spotted a yoke in my area that is on UK plates (no plates in the pic) and another one with no log book. Was thinking of giving the UK reg one a looksie tomorrow but I wanted to know what I should be asking for before I get there. And also, to look out for what screams 'RUN AWAY'

I'm slightly paranoid about them being stolen or ringers etc..... This money is all I have, and if I blow it on a stolen van, I'm buggared with no more cash and no more possibilities of getting more if you know what I mean.

Forget about the one with no V5.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying something stolen, Just do the usual checks on VIN number verses V5, make sure all details are correct, colour, reg etc. Anything your not sure on walk away.

I dont know the Van market, but are UK reg ones the only vans that fall into your price range? With a IRL reg as at least you might get some DOE and Tax.

No, there are a few IRL reg vans within my price range, but this one in particular is about half my budget, so I could still afford to VRT & Test it for the same price hence the interest.

I'm not sure if it applies to vans but I think since NCTS took over the VRT you're supposed to show that the vehicle landed within the last few days or it gets complicated.

He said the V5 is lost. I rekon its too much hassle to try to get a certificate of permanent export for a van under €500. There's also the risk of it being nicked

Is it me or is it fishy that he's selling two vans one with no V5 and one with no log book.

Edit: VRT is also now €200 and not €50
