    Sounds a bit strange?
    Fitted wrong?

Those turbos give very little problems--you sure its gone??

From what I remember its either a Renault or Mitsubishi turbo on them--Take it off and try a few scrapyards but look at either of the above models as well as Volvos.

not sure how true this is as its not my car ,but the owner told me he just bought the car early this week and was told the turbo had been changed.on the way home the car started losing power for a few miles and would then pick back up again.anyway he had someone look at the car and was told that the turbo had been fitted wrong, something about all the oil not been drained properly.he has been given some mad prices including 1 that was more than he pad for the car.

Firstly, check for air leaks in the intake pipework. Look for oil stains around pipe joints as these usually indicate where there are leaks.

Also the MAF on those give oddball driving symptoms like those the OP is reporting. The MAF is also Volvo specific (not shared with Renault or Mitsubishi) so you might well be advised to get a proper diagnostic done before condemning the turbo or the MAF.

I think youre thinking of the 1.8 petrol. The MAFs pack up on them every day of the week.

In the 1.9 diesel the MAF never gave any problems.I cant remember ever selling one.

That engine is usually quite reliable.

If it's not blowing oil out or making a nasty noise, plus permanently bad performance, it doesn't sound like a bad turbo to me.
Soemthing on the turbo control like a sensor, or maybe a vacuum lead , recirc valve etc. A good mechanic would be my advice, tyhough bearing in mind he only bought the car this week.... private sale ?
I'd be back to the garage otherwise.

the car came from a northern auction ,drove the first 50 miles or so and then started to smoke and loose power intermitently.he has got a new turbo lined up now thanks to a boardsie.
