    If you don't scan it at the gates and an inspector is on the train, how do they know? Can they check your card? Also any way to get away with it if they do catch you?

    As per the inspectors on the Luas, they have a Smart Card reader with them to verify the status of your card.

    Assuming its like the Luas card, the inspectors will have a reader which tells them if you tagged on.

    Pay the fare, OP. I'm so tempted to say, no they can't check the card, just so you get caught.
