Wondering what people's experiences are with this, is it useful?

I have found a Data Entry job that I am more than capable of doing, but there are a lot of applications. I always hear people saying you should make yourself stand out so I am wondering if it would be a good idea to add the guy to LinkedIn (the job ad send "send applications to ____"), or would that just annoy them?

If there's loads of applications then you need to stand out to get an interview. Fill out your Linkedin profile fully, listing some of the key tasks you performed in other jobs. Then get former colleagues and managers to leave you recommendations for previous work.

Next send him through a connection request but instead of the generic 'I'd like to add you to my network' write a short note saying you've applied, are really keen to work hard for them, etc. Finally point him towards your Linkedin profile. It will now act as a mini-CV if you've laid it out right and it's got recommendations from other people in companies (hopefully similar to his) who are visible on the site- which a very powerful tool in landing an interview. In short, give him a compelling reason why he should pick up the phone and want to talk.
