How difficult is it to sell a car these days?

I mean in terms of the poor economy etc.

I'm selling a 2004 Hyundai Coupe 2.0 shortly. It's in great nick but has 92k on the clock. Looking at autotrader etc it seems like the average for the year and mileage is about €4.5k - €5k but bearing in mind that it's a 2.0 petrol and therefore far from economical in terms of both fuel and tax, am I likely to be looking at having to take less than that?

Also how much less do dealers offer for trade ins. The plan is to sell the Coupe and buy another car from the North and pay the VRT but if I got a decent trade in and a good car in the South I'd go for it.

Can picture me pulling up at a dealer and being offered about €1500 trade in...

If you're next car has a screen price of about €8000 to €10,000 that could well be what they'd offer for an 04 2.0 Hy Coupe.

They're as low as €3.5k for the 1.6, very few 2.0s on there. Found 1 that's 2004, 2.0 and exactly 90k miles but there's no bloody price on the ad!

    There's a 2.7 for €7k

What I get for the Coupe will decide what I can spend on the next car so I doubt that a dealer will be any good. Most likely try to get about €4.5k, that'll give me about £4k sterling to buy a car and pay the VRT.

Think you're being a little optimistic there!

I reckon you'll end up settling for close to €3k on a private sale.

That's what worries me. The only place I'm getting the figure from is what I'm seeing advertised on donedeal, autotrader etc. Most are around €4.5-5k.

Here's one from a dealer with 50k miles with an asking price of €3,950

I had car for sale for 2 months on donedeal, no calls.

Dropped price to 100 quid less than the cheapest comparable car.

Phone call next day, sold it that afternoon, at the asking price (well I think I took 50 quid off it)

Noticed that the ones of this model which were at the same price as mine originally was were still listed for sale...

what is advertised as asking prices bear no resemblance to actual sell prices. I would suggest taking at least 20% off any of the lower prices you see advertised as a guideline of what people are actually paying.

I am speaking with recent experience as to what is happening. I recently sold my MKV GTI, which was an excellent example of the marque and the price I actually sold it for was way below anything comparable on either Donedeal or Carzone. It is a buyer's market out there.

Being a 2.0 litre it will need to be priced well below the cheapest similar 1.6 litre to have any chance of selling it. Unfortunately the 2.0 litre was never a big seller here as it never really had the performance to warranty the additional purchase price or running costs. Also alot of people would probably opt for a Celica if in the market for something peppier than a 1.6 litre version of the Coupe.
