..just wondering, as I heard comment afterwards: apparently Olivia O'Leary had a go at 'vintage' car users on the radio yesterday -anyone hear it ?

I don't see it on the RTE website yet...

    [edit] found it: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/player_av.html?0,null,200,http://dynamic.rte.ie/quickaxs/209-r1-drivetime.smil

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

She didn't have a go at vintage cars she had a go at the Irish Waterways people for allowing a parade of vintage vehicles along a delicate canal pathway.

I disagree. She singled it out because it was cars. And then threw in the 'what next' comment about motorbikes and tractors. Remember - it's 'our' canal too btw.

God help us if a smokey old barge passed by on the canal.........will no-one think of the rats/badgers/why ??

Several people got in touch with the show to point out that it was a one-off and she should stop being an old whinger. I didn't hear the piece because I think Olivia sounds like a teacher giving you a lecture for not doing your homework so I skipped over to RTE2 for a few minutes but when I went back I heard Mary Wilson reading out a few comments so I was able to figure out what she had said in the monologue.

I just read that the reason the canal route was opened to it, was that is was part of the original route.

So, the actual route taken on the current celebration pre-dates the inception of this State, and at the time was a spectacle of no less wonder than F1 is now.

And instead of celebrating the wonder of that spectacle - there were over 25,000 soldiers deployed to martial it, and full size grandstands were build in different places along the route, remember - and the then-NASA technology of the day (car's were only 5 yrs old, then, remember...........), all someone can do on the national airwaves is moan about it.

FFS. This place is gone to pot entirely.

Agreed. We should be encouraging this heritage and tourism for a race like the Gordon Bennet. Olivia, there are plenty more 'issues' out there to rant and rave against. Leave it out.
