    27" iMac
Fan became very load - back of iMac VERY hot
I powered it off and powered it back on
Hanging boot on Apple Logo - sometimes with a progress bar under it
Very hot back of iMac still

I called Apple (they wanted €39 to diagnose this - still in warranty too - disgraceful)
Apple said it a SW issue - I hung up

I booted from the Install DVD - Repair failed - Can't Rebuild Permissions - Verfify Greyed Out - Tried Repair again and says backup and format/reinstall. I trie this and reinstall says HD run Repair before it can proceed.

Disk Utility still shows the data on the drive. I'm bringing into CompuB in Limerick but they advised Apple require them to send back the failing HD if they replace it under warranty. My backup is a few weeks old and not sure what I've lost.

Any advice welcomed - poor advice from Apple though as no trouble shooting done to diagnose whether SW or HW just wanting to grab the money from me assuming SW issue.

Take out the drive and attach it to another computer (mac or pc) to grab all the data before it goes anywhere.

If you can get the data the rest is simple.

The standard warranty only gives you 30 days free telephone support. That's why they wanted to charge you to help you. You need to be quite clear in these cases that it's a hardware fault or else they'll just give you the software line. It's easier to just go to a AASP.

Do you have another Mac that you could hook up via FireWire? Or an external drive you could boot from? You might be able to access the data on the drive from there.

What OS could I put on an external to boot from? Any small OS that could fit on a memory key maybe abd copy off the data to an external drive

Will Mac OS install on an external usb drive to allow me to boot to that and then view/copy the data from the internal drive????

Yes. Intel Macs can boot from external HDDs via USB. Provided the internal drive isn't completely dead, you should then be able to copy data over.

Get yourself a firewire cable and another mac, then boot your troubled computer in Target Disk Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

The iMac uses a standard 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive. How did you get on with this issue by the way, any resolution ?

CompuB left it on test for a while but I wasn't willing to pay for datarecovery. They put new HD and works fine now.
On a seperate iss........... anyone know if one can rename the partition the Mac OS is installed on. Shows up in Finder as "untitled"

System partition? Just do it in the Finder.

EDIT, wait I see what you mean. Do it in the sidebar of a Finder window.

rename is there for all other devices/extn drives but not the "untitled". Is this cos the OS is installed there?

Everyone who calls in with a problem reckons its a HW issue. They have to diagnose it, and that takes time. It used to be the case that you were refunded the charge if it was diagnosed as a hardware fault.

perhaps a better policy then would be not to charge until TS done and exact solution confirmed

Its a Permissions thing. Do an 'Apple i' (get info) on the drive and see can you read&write to it (down the bottom). You can repair permissions via Disk Utility.

Be extremely careful, Do not alter Anything here and propagate.... it will seriously feck ur drive.

This is true however that applies to manually changing the permissions. If you use the repair permissions option in Disk Utility you only correct the OS permissions.

Isn't changing the drive name as simple as clicking on the text under the icon and typing the new name ? Or am I missing something ? It's always worked this way for me. Then I'm always logged in as admin perhaps that's the issue ?

Yeah, actually that works as well. Or you can select the hard disk in the Finder and press return (for some reason I thought this was changed, but it seems not).

When the customer says "thanks very much" for fixing their software problem and buggers off without paying? I don't think so......:pac:

they don't need to fix it just confirm the issue. or maybe just take the card details and not charge until confirmed sw issue

Just to clarify the name changing situation. Normally you can delay double click the text and modify the name or change it in the name and extension section of get info. This will work if the permissions are set normally ( see my pic ). If the permissions on admin and system are read only you will not be able to change the name. Disk Utility has an option to repair permissions of a system drive ( resets them to what they would be on initial install ).

If they go through the steps and fix the software issue on the way, they won't get paid. As I said it was always the way, that if they charged you and diagnosed it as a HW fault within warranty, they would cancel the charge. I'd be surprised if they have changed that.
