I saw the film last night in Cineworld. It's my favourite film & I've seen it many times before on TV & DVD. This time, it was just like seeing it for the first time, an amazing experience.

I figure a lot of people in the audience hadn't seen it before. The opening scene was excellent. I read somewhere that Martin Sheen improvised a lot of it. The music was great, particularly during the helicopter scenes. The Jim Morrison tracks were brilliant.

I thought some of the actors towards the end definitely looked like Phillipinos, rather than Vietnamese. Though I know of course, that the film was made in the Philipines.

It's a pity there was only one screening in Cineworld, as I'd like to go to it again! I know there were 2 screenings in the IFI. I prefer to go to Cineworld as I have an Unlimited card.

    Was anyone else there?

Moved from Film Reviews to allow for discussion.

I love this film. Haven't caught any of the screenings unfortunately, but I cannot wait for the Blu-ray. It's out on the 13th and, for first time on home video, will contain the original "scope" aspect ratio.

Must watch this again, someday. Haven't seen it in almost 20 years. I didn't bother go see the Redux version when that was released because I heard that it took away from the film, rather than added to it.

    Anyone seen the Redux?

The redux version is good. But it also accentuates all the ways Coppola's reach exceeded his grasp. It's good to have, but I prefer the theatrical version. At least Coppola gives both, unlike some directors...

My favorite film of all time. I don't like the Redux version and I think Coppola got the film right the first time. Redux kills the hypnotic pacing of the film, it feels very disjointed. I saw the theatrical version about fifteen years ago in Belfast and it was unforgettable on the big screen. I don't care if the final quarter of the film doesn't quite work, I still think it's one of the best movies ever made. Definately getting the Blu-ray when it comes out.

I've only seen redux, always meaning to watch the theatrical version, is it as slow paced as redux??

Didn't realise it was getting a cinema run, would love to see i on the big screen, not on around here of course.

The Redux version is 53 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. It has a big effect on the pace. There's also a bootleg of the workprint floating around that is 5 hours long.

5 hours?!? Bloody hell, no thanks :D

The film last night in Cineworld was about 2.5 hours long, so I'm guessing it wasn't the redux version. The timing of it was just about right, I couldn't have sat through 5 hours. I have the redux version on DVD, so must watch it again. I never tire of it.

Some amazing imagery. Particularly the arrival into Cambodia towards the end. I think this film sparked my life long interest in Vietnam, though of course I know I was shot in the Phillipines.

The audience in Cineworld seemed to be mesmerised by the film. I'd love to hear from anyone else who was there. Especially if you hadn't seen the film before. What did you think?

I saw this in Cineworld last night for the first time and I think "mesmerized" is the right word - what a film! It just felt horribly authentic in the way it portrayed war and the madness that goes with it. I hadn't even seen the trailer and I didn't know the plot. I'm so glad that I watched it on the big screen. This is a film that I'll force people to watch in future, but on Blu-ray, on a big TV and with the lights off. Unforgettable!

Wasn't alot of Martin Sheen's improv more of a result of his severe alcoholism at the time? I'm sure I recall something about him being entirely smashed for the famous opening scene. Outstanding film though.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, make sure you watch Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, George Hickenlooper's documentary about the making of the film. It's possibly the greatest film documentary ever made and is essential viewing for fans of the film. It's included in the upcoming 3-disc Blu-ray, despite the fact that Coppola would probably prefer that it didn't exist.

Number two in my own personal 'Greatest Movies of All Time' list. It's a staggeringly good film. Saw the theatrical cut a few years ago in the cinema, then Redux, annoyed I missed this showing. Such a brilliant piece of work.

Deadly film. The Doors track at the start really adds to the whole feel of the movie IMO.

For some ridiculous reason I've ever only seen the first half of this film! Didn't get a chance to get to the re-release :(

Looks like a nice Blu-Ray set though, will definitely consider the investment.

I rarely buy films these days but I will definitely be buying the Blu-ray of this.

Seen it possibly dozens of times and just love it. The redux version is vastly inferior imo.

Am i the only one who liked redux:o

Class film, based on solid material..just WOW.!

sheen was out of it in real life for the opening scene... parallels with his 'winning' son:confused:

I looked at those Charlie Sheen videos on youtube and couldn't help thinking he'd gone off on his own colonel kurtz adventure. He sure does reference his father and Apocalypse Now a few times in his rants.

Love this film. Enjoyed the Redux version but it does change the pacing of the film without question. Actually the Redux version makes the film even more surreal.

Yes, Martin Sheen went off the rails a bit (!). That's why the opening scenes are so great, it's hard to figure out does he really know what he's doing? Do have a look at the documentary, I think it's included with some of the DVDs/Blurays. Now that you are all talking about blu-ray, this is certainly worth getting a blu-ray player for. You're convincing me!

The good thing about it was that at least Martin Sheen got his act together, and recovered his health. He had a heart attack, probably all the high living. I was just thinking, Charlie must have been a young boy then. It's a pity Charlie is now suffering too.

Martin Sheen is my favourite actor. I've seen many of his films, but this has to be the role of his career.Though there are some other great actors too - Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper. I found it hard also to figure out if Dennis Hopper was "acting" or really playing up. Wasn't he also under the influence of various substances at the time?

I went back to read the book "Heart of Darkness" as a result of seeing this film. It sure was a dark journey. Though why did the really strange stuff happen just as they arrived in Cambodia? Surely it was just as dark too in Vietnam at that time.

I now want to go see the film again. I must take out the DVD at the weekend, just to remind myself.

I bought the US blu ray and it is well worth the price, not just for Hearts of darkness but many more extras for probably the greatest movie ever made. In the right aspect ratio the picture quality is excellent and the sound is very good.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"

    "The horror, the horror...."

    What's your favourite quote?

I've been listening to The Doors on CD a lot since I saw the film. Great sound track!

I've only seen the Redux version, which makes the film just shy of 3 and a half hours long, so inevitably it's a bit slow paced but I imagine the added scenes improve the film. The section with the French colonials is excellent and gives the film a real message and I think I'm right in saying that the scene where they steal the surfboard isn't in the original version, which is one of my favourite scenes!

Recently watched Redux for the first time and felt that certain scenes that were added took away from the pacing of the film and were unnecessary.

Think Coppola got it right the first time.

Having said that though, I don't think I've ever experienced anything as visually stunning.

    (I've only seen the Redux)

WHAT??? IT'S NOT? Aww that's a great scene!

I have to say I'm shocked and never noticed. But in all fairness, pointing "Misplaced sweat" really is being insanely pedantic. See here and here. Still doesn't stop the film being one of the greatest of all time. :D
We’ve all seen continuity issues and visible crew members and equipment littering our favourite films after multiple viewings, but which film has been crowned the most mistake-ridden?

‘Apocalypse Now’, apparently, which has a massive 392 mistakes as noted on MovieMistakes.com. Shadows of crew members in the sun, a bass that plays even when the player is scratching his head, props moving from shot to shot, disappearing smoke, sweat discrepancies and dubbing that doesn’t match up are among the listed gaffes caught by beady-eyed fans.

It seems that franchises have the least attention paid to them in production - or perhaps the most attention paid to them when they’re viewed multiple times on DVD - as the only other standalone movie in the top 10 is ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Films from the ‘Superman’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series make up the rest of the top ten, with avid viewers spotting hundreds of issues in each.

In ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ a crew member in modern clothes - a white t-shirt and a cowboy hat - is spotted in the background, just standing on the ship. ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ also features a visible crew member, when Snape pulls Malfoy back to his feet during the duel – we hope he got acting credits for that one.

Not making the list, but still notable, ‘Teen Wolf’ has one of the most famous gaffes of all time when an extra exposed his manhood on camera – and the cheeky editors kept it in!

Here are the top 10 mistake-ridden films according to MovieMistakes.com:

    1. ‘Apocalypse Now’ - 392 mistakes
    2. ‘Superman IV: The Quest for Peace’ - 328 mistakes
    3. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ - 304 mistakes
    4. ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ - 297 mistakes
    5. ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ - 290 mistakes
    6. ‘Star Wars’ - 267 mistakes
    7. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ - 262 mistakes
    8. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ - 257 mistakes
    9. ‘Scary Movie 3’ - 255 mistakes
    10. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ - 245 mistakes

Anyone who like this film should really read Heart of Darkness.... it's a quick enough read
