There's your problem right there - eircom mail. Why not go for a gmail account? Free and loads of storage. You could even do a fetch on your Eircom mail, if you want to keep that address

Yeah, if you are going to using it on your phone, you are better off getting an email account that has IMAP support.

no point in him setting up gmail until he can send/receive on his phone using eircom's settings. gmail will ask for them as well.
