"Blue Bloods" is on RTE 2 HD on saorview at the moment and according to the EPG info, subtitles are available. Switched on subtitles on my TV (Sony W4000 series), but no subtitles appeared. Maybe only fully saorview compatible receivers show subtitles?

My LG TV is UK spec and it can not received Saorview subtitles because Irish spec use Teletext VBI subtitle while UK spec is DVB subtitles

Can you get Aertel teletext, on channel 1,3,4 or 6?

    Kind of true.

Bear in mind that MHEG5 takes over the middleware and unless you can switch it off you will not have the option to view VBI subtitling via teletext.

So on RTE2HD with an MHEG5 TV but set to the UK, subtitling will not work. On a combo box it will display the subtitling no problem, BUT no normal aertel either on that channel! So the subtitling stream is there, but the aertel teletext isnt.

The reason I asked Mayo Exile if he can access tradition Aertel teletext, if so then that the TV can access subtitles without using teletext and then 888. If the TV can not access tradition Aertel teletext then it also will not received subtitles. one does not need to access tradition Aertel teletext then press 888 to get subtitles but just the subtitle button on the remote

Can't get the "old" Aertel with the Sony, only the new style text. It's set to UK.

Subtitles ok with an LG (LH 2000 series), set to Ireland.

I have a Sony W5500 and it shows subtitles on RTE digital. They look like Ceefax subtitles not like Freeview subtitles. I think I set the Country Setting to Ireland during set-up. You could try that and then sort your channels in the order which most suits in the Channel List.

Cheers. Tried again with the TV set to Ireland. Still no subtitles. Old or new text not available when TV set to Ireland either. UK country setting gives access to the new (MHEG) text.

This TV is UK spec. Since you set to Ireland and get no tradition Aertel teletext, then you will not get subtitles on Saorview.
UK spec use DVB subtitles while Ireland spec use VBI subtitles.

Thanks. BTW, can you not set your LG to Ireland? Is it an LD490 (DVB-T2?) series by any chance if you can't?

I'm confused. So, how come my W5500 gives subtitles? It's UK spec too, surely?

Varying degrees of compatibility with the Saorview spec I'd reckon. The newer the model the better it is. Looking at sony.ie, many of the TV's there now are listed as Saorview approved.

No, I can't because it is a purely UK only spec and made just for Freeview & Freesat spec aswell, LGxxLF7700.
This TV got only PAL I, UHF only not PAL II, VHF & UHF, it is also not multi-standard, i.e. PAL BG, PAL DK and so on
It also got DVB-T MPEG2 for Freeview & MPEG4 aswell as DVB-S2 for Freesat.
I notice a few things that does not comply with Saorview.
Subtitles, tradition Aertel teletext, no summer time with Saorview but correct time with Freeview and I guess few others that may surface over time.
I am not going to buy a T2 system yet as I will not get T2 transmisson till end of 2012 or March 2013, So I will wait til that date and maybe a lot of issues sorted by then.
Technology move so fast and some can be outdate quickly.

Yes. When set to Ireland, in Menu>Options theres a further option called "Data Service". You can select between "MHEG" and "Teletext". Teletext gives you access to traditional Aertel, while MHEG allows you to use the newer service.

Useful feature being able to select which one you like the most.

Souriau, Are you saying that Saorview does not broadcast DVB subtitles?

According to the Saorview Minimum Receiver Requirements, "The IRD [Integrated Receiver Decoder] shall be capable of decoding both EBU Subtitles and DVB Subtitling". If the receivers have to decode it, why aren't they broadcasting it?

Yes, RTE is not broadcasting subtitles on DVB format but using VBI system.
My LG is DVB system and can not received Saorview paltform subtitles.
I recorded some RTE progtam on my PC and VLC media player show that RTE is using Teletext subtitles while UK Freeview program subtitles are in DVB format
I am no qualified as to why or what, but I am sure there are someone in here can tell you better and why.

If you are only interested in subtitles, try setting the location to something other than ireland or uk, e.g. netherlands. I've done this on a philips and a samsung, and it works for pulling in subtitles from both saorview and freeview.

It still gets the full epg, but any mheg goodness is missing - red button services, the new aertel service.

It may only be a short term solution, as I think it's using the legacy teletext 888, which I presume will get dropped eventually (waste of bandwidth/uncool 70s tech).
