I think this is a great idea and will hopefully keep kids out of clubs but at €10/12 entrance fee, is it not a bit expensive?
Most clubs in Dublin don't charge that, and most have a free entry period.

Is it a Profit Making Initiative on the back of young people or an opportunity for young people in the community?
DUBLIN’S 1st Youth Based LGBT Club Night. (Ages 14-23)

This is an Alcohol Free event.

ID Launches Saturday 18th June from 7pm – 11pm in Copper Alley Nightclub and will be held monthly thereafter.

DJs playing the best in Pop/Charts & Commercial Dance. DJ Paul Ryder(PRHOMO) on the Decks for our first edition.

We aim to provide an alternative social experience for those LGBT youths who are either to young to attend Licensed clubs, or don’t want to.

Expect Smoke/Music/Lasers/Fruit Juice Cocktails/Jelly Shots/ and a few other surprises to be announced over the next few weeks!

ID is run Supporting BelonGTo Youth Services.

That sounds like a fantastic idea!! Except now I'm basically too old for it but had this been around a year ago I would have been all over it. The entry fee is the same at wez or any of those other things, no-one would mind it.

Not meaning to sound outta place, but is 14-23 not a very wide age range that could cause a bit of difficulty legally?!

Nope, it's the legal classification of youth. Most youth clubs/services run under that age range. :)

Ok fair enough, I can get that! Just don't think if I was a parent I'd be happy with such a wide age grouping!

That's not to say that I'm insinuating the event would not be safe....just we all know it only takes one fool to mess things up!

This is true, but there's so many of these under-aged events across the country. They'll be vigilant =]

An ex-housemate is a bouncer at an underage disco and tells stories that would be every parent's nightmare. We're talking in the 13-17 age range at that!

As a youth disco some of the older atendees could be put in a very precarious position given the anecdotes I've heard.

I don't really know if its a great idea to have it open to that wide an age range either if I'm a million per cent honest, it seems like its just asking for trouble. Like why would a 23 year old ever go to Wez, same thing applies to this.

my first thought was what if a 18 yr old goes off with a 15/16 yr old!? immediate trouble no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭Chuchoter

And then the parents of potentially not out 15/16 year old find out are pissed as hell at the 18 year old. Then you have really serious issues.

It's in conjunction with a youth network. They will have supervisors. Its only on from 8 till 11. It's not gonna be allowed be seedy, and anyways just remember consent laws only apply to penetrative sex. If a couple of guys are kissing and there's an age difference then so be it, if it happens in under junior clubs its consensual, same in this one. It's more targeted towards the young people in the youth network itself, I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

No self-respecting 18+ yo would go to it, so maybe a moot point.

On a positive note, this is great for teenagers. I imagine there'll be a lot of straight friends brought along too, and that this could even turn into an alternative to Wesley or whatever it's called these days. Sort of like that night War, which I'm led to believe is/was a kind of any orientation goes thing.

I remember Millenium Madness/The Cidona tour had an age range of something like 13-21. No-one over fifteen ever went.

This is really cool. I wish there had been something like this when I was younger.

That's interesting; it's like everyone automatically assumes that the youngest allowed will definitely show up, and so avoid it if they'd be perceived as "too old". To the same effect, perhaps this I.D. night should be billed as for 15-18 yos. At least everybody would be guaranteed not to be out of place age-wise.

It seems to me as thought it's asking for trouble

Bill it as 14+, don't define the upper limit, its how most teen discos are advertised in the country, nobody over 15 turns up. It won't make a bit of a difference to the night, or to the kids, but it will get the notion out of peoples heads that grown adults will be eyeing up kids, coz that's what they do ya know...
It sounds really good, if its managed well (which will be no mean feat, teens are teens after all) it could turn out to be a great thing for gay youth...
Come on you guys, the harriers, which I linked to up there, was a teenage disco and had a fully stocked, fully licensed bar in a separate area off the dance floor, even at that you wouldn't be caught dead there at 16, never mind 18. The only person near that room was the bouncer on the door. Surely ye remember being that age?

I really think this is a fantastic idea, I'm not saying I would have gone (although who knows?) but when I went to youth discos I always felt completely out of place and only went because the lads were going and it was the done thing. I had never even met a gay man before college, hopefully this will allow young LGBT people to meet and make other friends who understand them. Obviously I've brushed over the 'romantic' aspect of youth discos but that's going to happen anyways.
As far as the age limit goes I think the 23 is not actually expected to turn up I mean even at 19 I would definitely not consider going so I don't think there will be a massive problem there.
