Basically these are players who, in your opinion, look very good on shows such as MOTD, but when you see them play 90 minutes they're not as good as those type of shows make them look.

    I'll start:

    Morten Gamst Pedersen

Get out of it. Gerrard is usually central to most of Liverpools play. Thats why Liverpool used to be called a one man team.

I disagree. He looks better in highlights than he does over 90 minutes which is the point of the tread. He's a gamechanger and a matchwinner rather than a player that runs the game for 90 mins. Its not a criticism.

I remember a few seasons ago he used to look unreal on MOTD. He scored a few against United one season, if memory serves me correctly. Got him the next season for fantasy football and did absolutely nothing for me!

In that case, Ronaldo was the ultimate.

I guess I was thinking more current PL players, Ronaldo is a fair shout too looking wider afield.

Scott Parker, I know DM's tend to not get the plaudits they deserve, but he gets way to much, nearly any game he plays for West Ham their is a video after the game showing all the things he does great, they fail to show the longer videos of him messing up or the fact that the stuff he is doing is very very basic.

    so basically players that score/create!

I think it'd be easier to compile a list of non-match of the day players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

Attacking players really It's unusual for them to be a huge part of the defensive work but they are involved in all the match of the day clips.

Guys who aren't MOTD players are the likes of

    Xavi
    Messi
    Scholes
    Alonso

Fella's who make their team tick.

I've seen Scholes been praised many a time on MOTD. Although hes high profile and the best at it so thats why I guess.

    Alonso? Can't remember tbh.

I see your point for the 'lesser' sides who have such players.

They are more than MOTD players because they can ditate the pace or tempo of a game, along with the moments of magic.

Some defenders are more amenable to highlight reels. I always think the defenders like Carragher that make last ditch tackles and put their bodies on the line tend to look good on highlights, whereas you'd have to sit and watch guys like Ferdinand or Baresi closely over 90 minutes to truly appreciate how they use their antcicpation and positioning to snuff out problems before they even happen. The stuff they do doesn't tend to get shown on highlight reels but is just as, if not more important than the blood and thunder defending other types of defender do.

Its pretty sad that any time a United fan gives an opinion on anything to do with Liverpool that the response is always an attempt to start another United v Liverpool pissing contest.

I think Baresi was a bit more willing to put his body on the line. Thats a bit of a weakness with Rio's game which is otherwise brilliant. He does tend to turn his back on shots.

Jay Jay Okocha (what a DUDE)

    Berbatov

all I can think of really. Highlights of the 2 above might make you sh!t your pants. Great players for the highlight reel... over 90 minutes they're both good too imo but nothing close to how good they look when you just see a clip of some hottt sh!t

Avoiding the stupid posts that have ruined the past page really.

That's why I said Scott Parker, its a lot easier to say Forwards as that's basically their game, highlight reels. Where as Defenders and Centre Midfielders are the basics. But Parker seems to get the forwards treatment. If you just watched MOTD you would be thinking that Parker is one of the best midfielders in England, possibly the World. When really he is an average player in a really poor club.

Ah well, this thread was going well for about 10 posts. I suppose that's longer than most anyway!

Apologies. I think there is a general variation on what is meant by a MOTD player. Its difficult to describe someone who gets 25 goals a season as a MOTD player if they don't contribute that much apart from goals. E.G. Torres, Hernandez, Bent, Ronaldo etc.

Nah, I doubt it. Seems too tall to be Rooney. I'd guess John O'Shea.

Yeah I suppose, the stubble made me think it was Rooney.

While I think its probably unfair to include wingers in this because the nature of their game means they are going to give the ball away more often than central players, I suppose nani would fall into this category. Highlights of a game will more often then not include him either scoring or creating a goal, but he can still be infuriatingly inconsistent on a minute to minute basis.

I think Charlie Adam fit this bill last year. He really caught the eye when I saw him on Match of the Day, great range of passing, brilliant from a dead ball, and scored some good goals last season. But whenever I saw him in a full match his weaknesses became a lot clearer (lack of pace, doesn't cover much ground, inability/unwillingness to defend consistently) and he looked far from the complete midfielder that he looked like in highlights packages.

Javier Herdanez is the new ultimate so.

He was bought to score goals, and you can't say he hasn't done that so far.

    Charlie Adam.

Looks great on highlights cause you are seeing his attacking play that comes off.

When you actually watch his performances closely though..... worst thing is rumours of United moving for him are growing....

Holloway has hyped him to ridiculous levels.

You mean like Denis Irwin you'd never see him make a last ditch tackle because he never got himself into that position.
