ps3 just stopped working ?? help

I was playing black opts last night on my ps3 when it just shut down it self.
I try to restart it but all that would happen is green light, yellow light and then a flashing red light with 3 beeps in all about 8sec. I though it might be over heating and left it for a few hours but no joy. I open it and cleaned it (a lot of dust) closed it and still no joy. i have a 40gb fat ps3 for 4 years now and worked great untill now.
Is it a new PS3 or can I do something to fix it.
Plus the disc is trapped in it how do i get it out??

same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago!
its called YLOD and you can repair it in shops from around 60-100 euro depends!
you can get the disc out easily just look at this:

Exact same thing happened to me last night playing black ops and it was a phat ps3 too

I have been looking around google for anwsers for a few hours now and it is the same out come you can get it fixed but you will be lucky if it last more then 6 months plus this problem happens a lot with 3 and 4 year old ps3 makes you think.
what if i try to buy a 2nd hand ps3 40gb and put my old harddrive into it.
i'm not sure what to do and if i buy a new one how can i get my add ons and downloaded games off the old harddrive.

you cant. if you havent backed it up to another drive then its gone forever. you can either pay out for repair, refurb unit, buy a new one or like the thread below, try going through the small claims court (as i am currently doing). whichever way, u will never get the info on the ps3 you have now back

there seems to have been quite an upsurge in failing fat ps3s lately bought in third/fourth quarter 07

Seems to be a spate of failures the last couple of weeks, mine included

As other posters have said any repair is only going to be temporary

Left mine (launch day phat PS3) into consolepros at lunchtime on Saturday and had it back by 5pm

Didnt need the hard-drive in it so all my stuff was safe

Sony will charge you €150 and wipe your drive. I paid €75 with a 6 month guarantee

Sony are making it real hard for me with the hacking of the network and paying €270 to €350 for a ps3 that will only last 3 or 4 years but it's better that then in bill gates and Microsoft pocket;)
To be fair I got great use out of my ps3 it kelp me sain on Long winter nights and weekends. Well lets hope the next one I get will last a few more years then the last one I still have an old ps1 at home that still works fine. They say they don't make things like they use to. Well there right

This happened to a friend of mine a last year and I think they got a refurb off Sony.

I've a strange problem with my PS3 (40gb phat) the last couple of weeks. When I start it the first time nothing happens. The lights are on but the screen is blank. When I switch it off and on again it's fine again?
Have a feeling there's trouble brewing ahead

I'd back your hardrive up now, in case you can't when its too late.

I wouldn't go buying a 40gb ps3 - they are known for problems

I have been having the exact same issue with the last 2-3 weeks. 40gb phat works fine once I switch it off and back on again but like you I do fear the worst is still to come.

get your harddrive backed up ASAP I lost all my saved games files, game add ons and down loaded games. just got a new ps3 160gb today and
now i am down loading the first strike map pack again for black opts :mad:

Can you tell how much you paid for the 160gb, I'm looking for 1 at the moment.

Yes i paid 330euro and i got 160gb slim ps3 a game, hdmi cable and memory stick and a 2nd controller with that in xtra-vision. I think you will get just the ps3 160gb in argos for 280euro. I got it in xtra-vision because if anything happens to it i don't have to travel 50km to game shop or argos.
