So I get this error a lot:
A Network Error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen

It is occurring when I try to access the market place. Multiple clicks on retry does nothing.

Internet works fine on the browser...

Anyone know how to resolve this?

Wifi or 3g? If on work wifi some ports may be blocked.

If on 3g then maybe you just have bad signal. Phone indicates strong signal?

srsly78, thanks for the reply. Its 3g alrite, signal is good for other web pages... I'm on the O2 network.

Also the phone however has been rooted.

The other problem I have is that a lot of times when I access a https site (as opposed to http) it will fail stating: "Data connectivity problem - A secure connection could not be established".

I'm guessing they are all related... :(

I'm on HTC desire running 2.2

    Browser version: Webkit 3.1

Last year O2 used to portblock android market, but they didn't sell android phones back then. I would assume they have sorted all that out. Can you confirm that everything works properly over wifi? Try toggling airplane mode off/on and see if that fixes it.

If you're using a custom rom, make sure you're using their recommended radio.

If you disconnect from and reconnect to Mobile Data, does it fix the issue?

At home there I restarted then started airplane mode. Then turned on wifi. Everything worked.

I then turn airplane mode and wifi off.
Now I can get into the market place. So thank you for that.
However I still cannot get onto https pages.

Mr.E wouldn't restarting the phone do the same as what you are asking? About the radio, how can I verify that I'm using the recommended one? This was something I did ages ago.

    As for the APN...
    In Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names

I have O2.ie internet with the following settings:
    Name: O2.ie Internet
    APN: internet
    Proxy: 62.40.32.40
    Port: 8080
    Username: <Not Set>
    Password: <Not Set>
    Server: <Not Set>
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.ie:8002
    MMS proxy: 62.40.32.40
    MMS port: 8080
    MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
    MCC: 272
    MNC: 02
    Authentication type: PAP
    APN type: *

I removed proxy and port as per this thread and it seems to work...
    http://community.o2online.ie/t5/Android/on-android-i-keep-getting-message-secure-connection-could-not-be/td-p/251474

I also found the android settings as it might help someone else looking at this post
    http://help.o2online.ie/kb/ps?type=search&search=1&searchtype=2&c=12&cid=21&cpc=&searchstring=3618

I had entered them in some time ago and at the time they did work.
